Mon, 29 Jul 2024 19:06:19 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 ‘They are out of their damn minds’: Woman says she regrets opening up Macy’s credit card, says she will never shop there again https://www.dailydot.com/news/woman-regrets-macys-credit-card/ Tue, 30 Jul 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1634193 woman cutting credit card (l) Macy's storefront (c) letter changing APR to 34.49% (r)

A woman with a Macy's credit card reports getting a letter showing a concerning rise in its APR—which has her contemplating closing the credit card and not shopping there again.

The TikTok video warning, which starts with the creator saying, "Here's a warning, everyone," can be found on the Latina Plant Priestess (@latinaplantpriestess) account. It was put up Friday, getting more than 366,000 views since. In it, she shares a letter she got from Macy's informing her of changes to her credit.

"I got this letter as an update from Macy's, my credit card," she says, adding, "I have excellent credit."

She then says, "Oh, look at what it says now," showing that the APR on the card is jumping up to 34.49%. "They are out of their damn minds. They can close my account."

Rising credit card interest rates

She goes on to explain that it's possible to call and challenge the rate by August 26, but if a customer doesn't do that, the rate will take effect, based on her interpretation of the letter. She also points out, "You know that they lost me. I was a customer. They are cray cray."

She also advised people to close their accounts, which can actually negatively impact one's credit score.

Experian advises, "In general, keep unused credit cards open so you benefit from longer average credit history and lower credit utilization. Consider putting one small regular purchase on the card and paying it off automatically to keep the card active."

The rate might seem outrageous, but according to Forbes, current credit card rates are more expensive than you might think. For the week of July 29, "The average credit card interest rate is 27.62%."

The article adds, "The Federal Reserve keeps tabs on the average interest rate that U.S. consumers pay for a variety of different financial products—credit cards included. In May 2024, the average credit card interest rate in the U.S. on accounts with balances that assessed interest was 22.76%, according to The Federal Reserve."

It then adds, "Of course, the annual percentage rates (APR) you pay on your own credit cards might not match up with the national average. Credit card APRs can vary widely based on a number of factors, from your credit score to your debt-to-income ratio and beyond."

Commenters weigh in

One remarked, "Tjmaxx, Marshall’s, HomeGoods card is the exact same! I hate that I even opened a card with them."

Someone else said, "Same here! Had this card for 15 years! Never once late!! Great credit! I’m over it!"

"There is not one thing in Macy’s that is worth me buying at 34% interest," another observed.

The Los Angeles-based creator, whose real name is Laura Jardon, responded to the Daily Dot via email. She said, regarding contacting Macy's, that she hasn't reached out after further consideration. "I don’t believe there’s room for negotiation. I had recently reached out to another CC company, Capital One, about lowering their interest rate (24%) and they refused."

’30 minutes, no one comes up to us’: Macy’s customer hops behind counter because workers are busy, gets mistaken for employee https://www.dailydot.com/news/macys-customer-mistaken-for-employee/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1518631 Macy’s customer says they had to get behind counter, check themselves out after worker ‘did not want to’

Suit shopping for a destination wedding can be tricky if a couple does not plan on keeping the suit. One would-be customer says she and her fiancé's hunt for a rentable suit or tuxedo ended up with him behind the counter of a different retailer entirely.

In a video posted to TikTok, user Jo (@just.jo.things) says she and her fiancé started looking for suits at Men's Warehouse but were quickly turned off from the store when they went 30 minutes without being greeted or asked if they needed any help. Once they did find an employee, they asked if someone might be able to assist them, the young employee said they would go get someone—then walked around the counter and offered their assistance.

Unsatisfied with their experience at Men's Warehouse, Jo says she and her fiancé moved on to Macy's, where they were assisted by a kind associate who asked her fiancé to enter his information into their systems himself, while the associate assisted another customer. It was then, she says, that multiple employees mistook her fiancé for an employee despite having never seen him before in the store.

"The guy who helped us was absolutely lovely," she says in the video. "He was hilarious. He helped us order everything. He was a riot. There was another customer who needed to be checked out, so he had my fiancé come around the desk and start filling out his information. As he's typing on the computer, like the register of Macy's, people start coming over and asking him for help, and he's like, 'I don't work here,' and they're like, 'What?' This is his face being like, 'I cannot believe this is happening right now.' A Macy's employee even walked up to him and said, 'Hey, can you help do this?'"

When it came time to order the suit they decided they liked, it became a game of tag to get both the vest and the pants in the same color. Ultimately, after playing phone tag with Macy's customer service to order the items as they went in and out of stock, she says they were able to find both items in store during a later visit to the retailer.

@just.jo.things The experience buying / finding a suit for our destination has been WILD 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 #destinationwedding #weddingday #weddingsuit #groomattire #thegroom #2024bride #weddingdrama #weddingplanningdrama ♬ Pro Celtic violin performance [6 minutes longer](861501) - ricca

"Long story short, we then order this suit—OK, great, so excited," she says. "The suit he originally wanted was a blue linen suit, and it wasn't in stock, so the guy was like, 'I'm ordering it for you in tan.' Matt was like, fine, it's whatever. The very next day, he gets an email: the vest has shipped, but the pants are out of stock. So then I call Macy's. They're able to find blue pants in stock, so I order the blue pants and the blue vest, then the blue vest is out of stock."

The Daily Dot has reached out to Jo via email regarding the video.

Several viewers shared that they had similar experiences trying to shop with both retailers recently.

"The 17 year old employee at MW quit his job half ways through our appointment," one commenter wrote.

"Macys is such a wild place these days," another said. "I never know what I’m walking into."

"Your MW experience is basically the same as ours when we were getting married," a third shared. "No customer service whatsoever."

Should the pair ever need a suit for a different occasion, several viewers supplied alternatives to Men's Warehouse and Macy's.

"We just went to kohls," one commenter wrote. "It was easy and simple and under 150 and he has a suit for life now too."

"Nordstrom rack has suits for far less and a tailor on site," another commented.

"My husband got a custom suit with shirt and vest through a local tailor for I think like…$350," a further user suggested. "10/10 recommend!"

‘This literally happens every day’: Macy’s customer shares PSA on return scam that could cost you money https://www.dailydot.com/news/macys-return-swap-scam/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 01:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1476775 Macy’s customer shares PSA on return scam that could cost you money

A woman issued a public service announcement regarding jeans at Macy’s: In order to prevent getting scammed, check the tags and pockets.

The video featured TikTok user Vivian (@vivianinthedmv) who shared her experience while perusing through Macy’s. While at the retailer she saw a pair of Wild Fabel shorts hanging on the endcap, recognizing the brand from Target. Upon further inspection, the content creator noticed the tag which read “Silver Jeans Co.”

Her theory? “I think somebody bought these pair of shorts from Target and switched it with a more expensive pair from Macy’s,” she said. “And then returned it so they could, like, get their price or whatever.”

Furthermore, another pair of cute jeans captured her attention. When the cashier was ringing Vivian up, she noticed an empty Clinique mascara package attached to a sensor in the pant pocket, indicating the jeans originally belonged to someone else. “Someone must have taken that and stuffed it in my pocket,” Vivian explained. However, if the cashier didn’t find it, the mascara could’ve sent off the sensor, making it appear she stole the mascara.

“Just beware,” she concluded.

The Daily Dot reached out to Vivian via Instagram direct message and TikTok comment and Macy’s via press email. The video amassed 4.2 million views where current and former retail workers revealed how often this happened.

“I worked in retail for 7 years and this literally happens like every day lol People are very sneaky,” one viewer shared.

“I used to work at Macys and stuff like this happened all the time,” a second wrote.

“When I worked retail management, I used to always check pockets of coats, and pants hanging for sensors. I’d find DOZENS,” a third stated.

In addition, other retail workers shared their similar experiences.

“I worked at Dillards where we have silver jeans. People would just come in and try them on and leave old jeans in dressing room,” one user recalled.

“Girl I worked at Nordstrom and we had someone return an UGG jacket as monclair…and the employee took back a cameo UGG jacket and gave this person $1800,” a second commented.

Switcheroos of this nature have gone viral before. A Marshalls customer discovered a pair of used white slippers hung in front of pink and black Puma slides. The bottom of the shoes had black gunk, showcasing its previous wear and tear. Another TJ Maxx customer claimed she was almost scammed out of a fake Veronica Beard dress after she noticed the price tag and the one on the dress didn't match.

‘Macys is notorious for double scans’: Shopper shares PSA after being charged $120 extra without warning https://www.dailydot.com/news/macys-double-scan-psa/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 14:04:49 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1464544 Woman talking(l+r), Macy's storefront(c)

While out holiday shopping, it can be painfully easy to overspend, between the advertisements of deals, impulse purchasing, and the endless onslaught of inexpensive baubles available near checkout lines.

Some folks may painstakingly calculate how much they are spending as they go, while others prefer to be surprised at the register. The hustle and bustle of checkout—both self-checkout and the cashing out handled by store employees—can leave customers open for mistakes in their totals.

One shopper at Macy's says the department store double-charged her for a gift set she had purchased, but she did not realize the mistake until she had already paid for it.

In a video that has drawn over 230,000 views on TikTok, @andreiitav_ says she is not sure how, but she was charged for three perfume gift sets at Macy's, after choosing the two that she wanted to take home.

"I was at Macy's trying to do some holiday shopping, I was in between a couple gift sets—I literally had 50 samples—walking around I think I smelled every single perfume," she says. "I was in between these three sets. I was going back and forth between these two. I ended up choosing one, but I had one that I set aside. I was only supposed to buy two gift sets."

She says her order was taken to be packaged, so neither she nor the cashier could see that she was only getting two of the gift sets, and she was initially shocked to see her total come out to nearly $400. It was not until she looked at her receipt that she realized she had been overcharged.

"I know my math is not all that great, but it had two items, $120 each, and the total was almost $400," she says. "I was with my friend but my friend was walking around doing something else. I was very confused, and by the time I was trying to process the math and everything, I tried to take a picture and everything was blurry. They were like, 'OK, you're ready to scan now,' and it doesn't show the total when you scan, it's just like, put your card. I was like, I'm just going to check the receipt."

She did check her receipt and was able to have the extra amount refunded to her, but she warned other shoppers to be aware of any additional charges that might pop up on their receipts from double scans or miscommunications about what is being purchased.

The Daily Dot has reached out to @andreiitav_ and Macy's via email regarding the video.

@andreiitav_ BE CAREFUL YALL #checkyourreceipt ♬ original sound - andreiitav_

Several viewers commented on the video that they had been charged for more than they bought in a variety of stores, even in the self-checkout.

"This happened to me at Walmart," one commenter wrote. "The screen showed that I scanned two items, I paid and left home...the receipt showed I paid for 3 items. How?"

"Bath and bodyworks charged me extra for on sale items too," another shared. "Got a handful of travel stuff that was supposed to be 2-3$ and they added $1+ each."

"Also be careful when checking and someone does a price check but charges," a further commenter said. "Almost happened to me once."

A few viewers with experience working for retailers like Macy's advocated for the employees, writing that it was probably just an honest mistake.

"Sounds like an honest mistake," one commented. "Especially when people take multiple items and start changing their minds at the register."

"Maybe it was an accident I used to work at Macy’s they dont do commission," another said. "During the holidays I can confess that I have accidentally scanned things."

"That was definitely accidental and she just didn’t notice," a further user commented. "Sometimes scanners scan more than once on accident and Macys doesn’t do commissions."

‘No training and I don’t know what am doing help’: TikToker claims they applied to be Macy’s cashier and was made a Starbucks barista instead https://www.dailydot.com/irl/tiktoker-applied-macys-cashier-starbucks-barista/ Tue, 08 Feb 2022 15:11:55 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1173322 starbucks branding on cup holders with syrups and caption "i applied to be a cashier at macys and they stuck me here with no training and i don't know what am i doing help" (l & r) young man in glasses (c)

In a viral TikTok video, one user claims they applied to work as a cashier at Macy’s but started working as a Starbucks barista instead.

“I applied to be a cashier at Macy’s and they stuck me here with no training and I don’t know what I am doing help,” the user, @rubberpunch, wrote via text on the video.

https://www.tiktok.com/@rubberpunch/video/7062133637067820334

The TikTok sees them frantically moving the camera behind the Starbucks bar, which appears to be in a Macy’s store.

With nearly 60,000 views, the video sparked responses from other Macy’s employees who’ve allegedly had similar experiences.

“Literally had the same exact experience with starbucks in a macys… it sucked lol,” one user said.

“LMAOOO MEEE they literally put me in womens shoes,” another user said.

“Dude it was so complicated for me too they put me at fragrance department and i oop,” a third said.

Another Macy’s employee seconded these experiences.

“As a finish line Macy’s person, girl the cashiering is garbage I swear,” they said.

However, one user commented that they loved working at a Macy’s Starbucks.

“Working at a macys starbucks was my favorite job ever :(,” they said.

In addition, many other users offered tips to help the untrained worker.

“Hi! I’m a barista! I can give you any tips you need! This is so stressful. They should have trained you if they wanted you in that position,” one said.

“Quizlet has the recipes ... that’s how I learned,” another claimed.

Macy’s pulls portion-control plates after social media uproar https://www.dailydot.com/irl/macys-body-shaming-portion-plates/ Tue, 23 Jul 2019 19:59:35 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=610204 macy's portion plates

Macy’s came under fire over the weekend after podcast and TV host Alie Ward called the department store chain for carrying plates with demeaning messages about portion control.

The stir began Sunday afternoon when Ward tweeted a picture of two of the plates from the Pourtions collection at Macy's. “How can I get these plates from @Macys banned in all 50 states," Ward wrote.

One plate had three circles, the smallest labeled “skinny jeans,” the middle labeled “favorite jeans,” and the largest labeled “mom jeans.” The second plate in the picture had only two circles, “foodie” and “food coma.”

Many people in the replies, noting that the size of the “skinny jeans” circle was too small to fit recommended portions for a full meal, accused Macy’s of promoting anorexia and disordered eating.

Others joked about how the proportions on the plate simply don’t make sense. Just because something is taking up less physical space doesn’t mean it has fewer calories or is healthier.

The replies were also full of people telling Ward that the plates were “just a joke,” or making body-shaming comments about her and anyone who felt the plates could be problematic.

The idea that it’s all “just jokes” and has nothing to do with unhealthy standards for women simply doesn’t hold up to scrutiny when you compare the ladies’ plate to the men’s plate. While the men have two portion sizes—“manicotti” and “man overboard”—the third, smaller portion on the women’s plate implicitly pushes the idea that women can and should eat less.

But the company behind the dishes, Pourtions, told the Washington Post that its online orders have "tripled" since Sunday's social media backlash.

Macy’s responded to the criticism within the day, saying it would pull the products from all their stores. In a statement to the Daily Dot, a Macy’s spokesperson stated, “We apologize to our customers for missing the mark on this product. After reviewing the complaint, we quickly removed the plates, which were only in our STORY at Macy's location in Herald Square.”
