Why is American rapper Flavor Flav at the Paris Olympics and spending time with the USA Water Polo team? Let us explain.

When it comes to things that make you go “whaa?”, the Olympics are a harvest season of true abundance, a point that’s even more driven home by this year’s featuring stuff that’s extremely, what’s the word, French. From headless Marie Antoinette metal performances to Stranger Things-meets-Phantom of the Opera opening ceremonies, there’s no shortage of curios so far at this year’s Paris Olympiad.

However, if you’ve been watching any of the water polo events so far, you may have noticed a recognizable figure who seems lost and, knowing him, very well might have been. 

Yes, rap legend Flavor Flav has been ever-present at the US polo events. You’ve undoubtedly caught a glimpse during the broadcast so far and thought, “wait, shouldn’t he be wearing comically large clock necklaces somewhere?”

However, Flav’s presence is of a more official manner than you might imagine. And it’s fantastic. 

How Flavor Flav got involved with Olympic Water Polo

On May 4th, water polo Olympian Maggie Steffens posted on Instagram that revealed how many Olympic athletes hold second and third jobs to help achieve their medal dreams. 

Below that post was a comment by Flav, who wrote, “AYYY YOOO,,, as a girl dad and supporter of all women’s sports—imma personally sponsor you my girl,,, whatever you need.” 

“And imma sponsor the whole team,” he added. “My manager is in touch with your agent and imma use all my relationships and resources to help all y’all even more. That’s a FLAVOR FLAV promise.”

How good is a Flavor Flav promise, you ask? As good as its weight in gold clock necklaces, because on July 1st, Flavor Flav officially signed a five-year sponsorship deal with USA Water Polo to cover the men’s and women’s water polo teams.

Flav spoke to NBC Olympics in May to explain more of his reasoning behind the support. “For me doing this, I ain’t gonna lie, to me this is one of the biggest things that I feel that I could have ever done in life, outside of the other accomplishments that I’ve made to music,” he said. “By sponsoring a water polo team and helping these girls out, this is bigger than me winning a Grammy.”

It’s all pretty awesome and Flav looks like he’s having the time of his damn life cheering on the team, encouraging other celebrities to do the same, and even hanging out with First Lady Jill Biden.

Flav’s also not content to just cheer from the sidelines. The man wants in on the action too:

If you could wish for any TV series to do an Abbott Elementary crossover, what would it be?

Sorry kids (and teachers—oh my stars, especially teachers), but it’s almost back to school time. Fortunately, for us all, that also means back to a very specific school: Abbott Elementary.

Quinta Brunson’s multiple-Emmy winning series that is “The Office but school” returns for its 4th season on Wednesday, October 9th on ABC. And it’s apparently bringing another show along with it.

During Abbott’s SDCC panel appearance this past weekend, Brunson teased a crossover with another show for season 4.

“We will be doing an interesting crossover this season,” she said, “I’m not gonna tell you with who or with what or where or when or how. But just know, it’s very exciting and I think it will change television as we know it.”

Naturally, this tease had the internet’s wheels spinning, with possible shows being speculated on and, as a result, some immensely fun sounding pairings that I now want to all occur. 

The most likely candidates here are shows already owned by Disney/20th/Hulu, so the speculators focusing on those shows are likely warmer.

Professional dancer revealed to be "Dancepool"

Actually, no. It turns out the dancer was a double named Nick Pauley, who is a pro with previous work for Katy Perry and Doja Cat. WHAT?!

Big things have arrived on The Sims 4.

July 23rd was a world-changing day for the digital denizens of the Sims-verse and their all-ruling God human puppet masters. For you see, there was a free update to the base game, but it wasn’t just any ol’ run of the mill, bug fixin’ update. No no.

As of this week, the game contains straight-up polyamory! The new update also allows you to livestream your gameplay without worrying about copyright infringement issues for music.

Sims 4 update introduces streaming mode

If you go into the the Music section of Game Options, you’ll now see a “Safe for Steaming” toggle that allows you to play only the music that’s safe for streaming.

TikToker @jeremy_gonewild explains the update thusly: "This blocks copyrighted music from playing on your Sims radio when they listen to the radio."

But, Jeremy cautions, "This isn't about build mode music, or the Create-A-Sim music, that stuff is fine. This is preventing a Simlish version of Last Friday Night by Katy Perry from coming on your Sims radio while you're livestreaming, earning you a copyright strike."

To his point, you'll notice quite a difference between songs that are copyright approved. You'll notice all of the in-game original Sims music—including those composed by Mark Mothersbaugh—are free to use in streaming mode:

When you take a look at every other music genre, nearly all of the Simlish versions of actual songs don't make the cut:

While your sims won't be having a Brat Summer during a live stream anytime soon, you'll no need to worry about your Sims live stream being rudely interrupted because of the man!

Polyamory enters The Sims 4 with latest update

But that's not all. Yup, things are about to get real messy in the Sims-vese, folks. The update contains a feature called Romantic Boundaries, which allows users to add nuance to their romantic in-game relationships, tweaking their Sims’ preferences around jealousy and exclusivity.

According to the update’s patch notes, “[You can] define the conditions under which your Sims become jealous.”

How jealous can your Sims get? Well, there’s now quite the range, as your Sims could get jealous at non-physical romance, physical romance, "WooHoo", or, if you’re not all about that drama life, they can not get jealous at anything.

The controls exist in the Create-A-Sim feature, alongside the Gender and Sexual Orientation options in the Identity panel. These features can be changed at any time. 

However, you’re not locked into your choices, as your Sims’ opinions and preferences can be changed at any time. It'll look something like this in the Simology menu under Relationship Preferences:

The polyamory feature has been heavily requested, as beforehand, the only method players could get their Sims to have multiple romantic partners would be to complete a serial romantic aspiration to achieve a trait that prevents it. There were also cheats one could copy-paste that would give them the trait instantly.

But, no more: Sims can now dip into many inks with no hoops to jump through. At the same time as the base game update, EA also introduced an expansion pack called Lovestruck, which introduces even more locations for sims to "WooHoo" in.

Is 'Brat Summer' already a thing of the past? Not quite.

We all know the feeling: after a slow start, we’re pumped that our brat summer’s finally in full swing. It’s mid-late July and we’re in full brat summer mode, going to brat cookouts, hitting up the brat beach, taking in a match of bratball at the local bratpark. Then it happens—we stop by Target for some batteries and “back to brat school” signs are everywhere! What the hell, man? We were just hitting our stride!

According to some publications, Charli XCX’s brat summer is indeed over. Why? Depends on who you ask.

According to Pitchfork, brat summer ended last week, when, in the wake of President Biden’s announcement he was dropping out of the race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, Charli XCX posted “Kamala IS brat.” 

“In the hours following, Harris’ social media team leaned into her support, updating their social headers to BRAT’s green hue,” said the article. It continues, “Soon, people who were absolutely not having a Brat Summer—CNN reporter Jake Tapper, Minnesota governor Tim Walz,—began to pile atop an already fragile meme,” declaring that, “by the end of the day, Brat Summer had been pronounced dead.”

Similarly, Dazed makes an argument that the squares got a hold of the term and thus, it has been unalived:

Bob Dylan biopic trailer released

Yesterday, the teaser trailer for James Mangold’s Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown dropped, giving the world its first glimpse of Chalamet as the freewheelin’, mumbly troubadour in action. (It was only just March of this year when we spotted Timmy filming for this in the streets of New York.)

The film covers Dylan’s rise to prominence as a folk music prophet, culminating with his controversial decision to go electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. As a result, we get a look at many era-appropriate West Village, NY locations, such as the Cafe Wha?.

We also see Edward Norton’s Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning’s Sylvie Russo, and Monica Barbaro’s Joan Baez, among others. 

But what of Chalamet?

Over the past sixty or so years, Bob Dylan impressions are dime a dozen. Heck, at times it sounds like Dylan himself is doing a Bob Dylan impression. Thus, Chalamet’s interpretation has to go a bit deeper, and has to reflect the human being beneath the “Dylan” persona. (Of course, he could have just asked Cate Blanchett for some coaching.)

It appears Timmy has done his homework, producing a voice that’s got the spirit of the original article without being a caricature. And those little eye twitches during his concert performances? Spot freaking on.

"Hello There" is a quote from Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 2005 prequel film Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. In the online community, the scene it originates from has been used in various remix videos and images, in addition to appearing as copious internet comments. The meme is meant to portray surprise met with a dash of mischief, particularly among the internet Star Wars fandom. 

Where is the Hello There meme from?

The Hello There meme is from Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which was released on May 19th, 2005. In context, Obi-Wan Kenobi jumps from several levels above to surprise rival and secondary film villain General Grievous, accompanied by a gleeful “hello there!”

On August 21st, 2007, a remix of the Sith moment appeared on YouTube via user Thereisnospoon303 titled "OBI-WAN SAYS HELLO WHILE I PLAY UNFITTING MUSIC." The video currently sits at 48k views. 

Seven years later, on March 25th, 2014, the moment appeared on Tumblr among several other Obi-Wan GIFS via a post by suzcatonmars. The post has received more than 2,100 notes and is still live here. 

Like Obi-Wan himself, Hello There lay low for a few years until January 29th, 2017, when Imgur user Spatzz posted a photoshopped version of Obi-Wan saying the line as part of a "dump of 50 prequel memes." The post received more than 1,600 points and 96,000 views.

Concurrently, the Hello There phrase and image started to gain prominence on Reddit in /r/PrequelMemes. For instance, a popular photoshopped shitpost involving the moment appeared on February 24th, 2017 via zenthegod.  

This led to the meme being used more regularly on the subreddit as time passed. For instance, on July 23rd, 2018, a clip from Star Wars: Clone Wars which recreates the original Hello There scene, but with General Grievous saying the phrase, was edited into a clip from the sitcom Parks and Recreation featuring Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman).

The following year, as many things do, Hello There found its way to TikTok. On December 4th, 2019, user @chuggernuts uploaded an audio clip from the original Revenge of the Sith scene and reenacted it. The post garnered 28.7k likes in a month.

A couple of weeks later, on December 19th, TikToker @codecosplay uploaded another version of the scene in which two people create a four-arm DIY General Grievous. In its first three weeks, the video garnered 366k likes.

As time went on, the Hello There TikTok remixes and parodies became increasingly abstract.  For instance, December 31st, 2019 saw the posting of a video featuring the DIY Grievous brandishing odd items as weapons. That video saw over 312k likes in its first week.

Why does Obi-Wan always say “hello there”? 

The short answer as to why McGregor’s Obi-Wan said “hello there” is because Alec Guinness said it in the original Star Wars (or Episode IV: A New Hope). The first line humanity ever heard from Obi-Wan Kenobi was “hello there!”

If you recall, Obi-Wan, in a hooded getup, rescues Luke and R2D2 from Tuscan Raiders on Tatooine. Once Obi-Wan’s successfully defeated the foes, he approaches R2D2, takes off his hood, and utters “hello there” to let the droid know he means no danger. It’s a nice little moment and a great introduction to an iconic character. 

In larger Star Wars canon, “hello there” has also been said in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and Obi-Wan 5, among others. Speaking of which…

What is the reply to 'hello there'?

As in the original Revenge of the Sith scene, the only appropriate reply to “hello there” online is “General Kenobi!” As a result, you see it pop up in countless comments sections in content featuring “hello there,” whether intentional or not.

For instance, a 2018 Instagram post by Emma Roberts captioned “hello there” proceeded to receive 113,000 comments (with some as recent as the week of this writing) and counting, with pretty much everyone posting “General Kenobi!”

Ewan McGregor addresses the meme

During a May 24th, 2022 interview promoting his new Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, McGregor confirmed he was aware of the “meme legacy” phrase. He also mentioned that he’s said it a few times in his everyday life. While McGregor admits he does not enjoy when people request for him to say it on the street, he enjoys the catchphrase on its own. 

It’s a good thing that McGregor tolerates the line, because he was written to say it again in 2022’s Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. During the scene in question, he greets a young child version of Luke Skywalker. Bringing the quote into the 2020s has led to some notable YouTube compilations of all the different versions of “hello there,” notably the below video uploaded by Kakuchopurei on June 22nd, 2022.

The internet has been making stars ever since the yellow AIM guy got cast on One Tree Hill. Now, Skibidi Toilet is the latest internet sensation to make the leap to Tinsel Town.

You know Skibidi Toilet: the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen? Remember? Sure you do. 

If you’re over the age of…16? Skibidi Toilet is a very popular digital video and game series that feels like a cough medicine trip because it pretty much is. That is to say, creator Alexy Gerasimov started his empire with an 11-second YouTube video featuring a singing head emerging from a toilet. If it’s not quite Walt Disney sketching Mickey Mouse, it’s pretty damn close.

From there, an empire was created, with over 70 videos being posted in the series depicting an escalating war between Toilets and Cyborgs. Sounds bizarre and niche, right? Well, the YouTube channel has over 42 million subscribers, so not so much. It’s Generation Alpha’s Spongebob, Sesame Street, and Peppa Pig combined. 

Michael Bay takes on the Skibidi Toilet film franchise

Now, the property is being developed for TV and film per Variety.

I hear you scoffing. I feel the rolls of your eyes. But they said Lord of the Rings was unfilmable, but Peter Jackson proved them wrong. Then they said Dune was unfilmable, but Denis Villenueve proved them wrong. Now, they’ll say Skibidi Toilet is unfilmable, and the one to prove them wrong is…uh, Michael Bay. 

Yes, Bay is developing the property alongside former Paramount Pictures president Adam Goodman. The venture is said to include merchandise, puzzle games, and so many more opportunities to bring Skibidi Toilet into our physical world.

Nerds rejoice: the Olympics aren’t just for jocks anymore!

On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee (or IOC for you abbreviators) voted to approve the creation of the Olympic Esports Games (or OEG). The vote was unanimous and, as the IOC themselves describe it, “historic.” 

Why are Esports now part of the Olympics?

What are Esports you ask? Why, that would be people who are very good at video games playing video games against other very good video gamers, often in a tournament or similar arrangement. They can be played at professional or amateur levels. 

The Olympic development makes sense when you realize how absolutely ginormous Esports are as an industry and cultural phenomenon. It’s a freaking billion-dollar industry for crying out loud.

Also, it greatly behooves the Olympics to tap into that untapped market: indoor kids. The first edition of the Olympic Esports Games are slated to take place in 2025, when the event is held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

A new era for the Olympics

A press release from IOC President Thomas Bach heralded the decision as a “new era” for the group. “With the confirmation by the IOC Session of the creation of the Olympic Esports Games, we are keeping up with the pace of the digital revolution,” said Bach. 

“The esports community, represented in our Esports Commission, has enthusiastically engaged with this initiative,” Bach continues. “This is further proof of the attractivity of the Olympic brand and the values it stands for among young people.”

Note that these games are not a part of any winter or summer games, but an entirely different event altogether.

As for what games specifically will be included in the events, nothing’s yet been revealed, but gaming fans have met this news with a range of emotions.

This week, Olympians have taken to their own personal Louis Vuitton runways, as their uniforms have started arriving. Obviously, the excitement at receiving your Olympic uniform is hard to top, so various athletes have taken to TikTok to display their new threads. The trend has caught on pretty significantly, giving us normies a snazzy preview of what to expect when the games begin on July 26.
