A woman is issuing a warning to cat owners about automatic litter boxes after the tragic death of her cat, Mochi. Here's what we know so far.

TikTok user Carli Jay (@carli.jay) posted a video yesterday detailing the horrifying situation. “So I hate that I’m having to make this, but I just want to warn everyone and anyone who has or plans to get a robot litter box.”

After an emotional pause, Jay reveals why she is issuing this warning. “Yesterday morning, we woke up—me and my 2-year-old daughter—and I went to find my cat, and she was hanging from her litter box.”

What happened to the cat

Jay continues, “It had closed on her neck and there was red stuff everywhere. And she was gone .I just want to warn anyone—just don’t use them. They are dangerous. I have a 2-year-old daughter. If it can be a cat it can be anything. Our poor baby Mochi. Nothing will bring her back.”

She urges anyone who is considering purchasing a robotic litter box to reconsider the decision. And anyone who already has one should throw it away. She indicates that the brand that made her robot litter box has reached out to her about this incident.

“I just want everyone to be aware that they are dangerous,” she says.

More details in a follow-up video

In a follow-up video, Jay answers questions from TikTok users about the specifics of the situation. She replies to a user wrote wrote, “Yeah we're gonna need a little more information, like which litter robot? Mine stops moving if any motion is detected and won't restart for like 10 mins after or else you have to manually start it.”

One thing she says she will not reveal the name of the brand that she owns, because she is not yet sure what she is legally able to say on social media.

“As soon as I hear what I’m allowed to say, I absolutely will blast the company,” she says. “I don’t want this ever happening again.”

Jay says her robotic litter box was new, and it came equipped with sensors and an app that alerted her when Mochi used it. “It definitely had a sensor,” she says. “It sensed when she was in front of it. The thing would constantly stop. But something happened. It happened in the night when we were sleeping.”

She adds, “I will say ours had a door. And that’s what went up … [and] she was hanging from.” Jay says that in her mind, it’s easier to scoop cat waste manually rather than having to worry about a fatal malfunction—however unlikely it might be.

Viewers react … and speculate

The videos have amassed a combined 430,000 views as of Monday evening. In the comments, users offered condolences, suggestions, and speculation.

One user wrote, “Omg I’m so sorry please sue them so they take this off the market and do a recall.” Jay replied, “Thank you, they have stopped selling it on Amazon... I'll be seeking legal action tomorrow as it is the weekend.”

Another user wrote, “I have the Litter Robot... The sensors are amazing. I can definitely see this happening with one of the cheaper knock off ones. I’m so sorry.”

Someone else wrote, “Which brand? I have litter robot but it does have pinch detect and is safe. Please which brand was it.” While Jay did not confirm the manufacturer, the Daily Dot has reached out to the brand mentioned in the comments section for comment.

JD Vance’s 2021 remarks birth ‘childless cat lady’ memes https://www.dailydot.com/memes/childless-cat-lady-memes/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 21:18:04 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1634537

Childless cat lady memes mock remarks made by Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance about Democrats such as Vice President Kamala Harris. Vance’s comments trashing women who don’t have children, whether by choice or biological or environmental circumstance, have not gone over well with much of the massive voter block.

“We are effectively run in this country, via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too,” said Donald Trump’s running mate. “And it’s just a basic fact if you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC—the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children.”

What are the childless cat lady memes about?

In response to this derision towards women who have cats but no children, people have been posting photos of their favorite ladies who love cats as "childless cat lady" memes. These include widely beloved figures with mass numbers of fans such as singer Taylor Swift and the late actress and animal lover Betty White.

JD Vance's "childless cat lady" remarks

Vance made the "childless cat lady" remarks on July 29, 2021, on an episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight. The then-Ohio Senator was trying to claim that people can only feel as though they have a stake in their nation's future if they have biological children.

Harris is the stepmother of two children brought into her life by her husband, attorney Doug Emhoff after they met on a blind date in 2013.

The childless cat lady memes of 2024 began to pop up around Twitter on July 22, just after Vance's old comments resurfaced amid hype for Harris' presidential campaign.

What's with the childless cat lady hate?

The stereotype of the childless cat lady or "crazy" cat lady mixes contempt for the image of the "spinster" that originated in the 18th century with the even older fear of the witch who keeps cats and is more likely to eat children than birth them.

In 1881, writer Hart Ayrault bemoaned the unmarried, childless woman who had "failed in the prime object of existence"—which, at least for women in Vance's view, was marrying a man and popping out kids.

"Tradition associates her with cats and parrots, on which she is supposed to lavish all that is left of affection in her withered heart," he wrote in Potter’s American Monthly.

Jennifer Aniston responds to Vance

On July 24, actress Jennifer Aniston posted to Instagram Stories, lambasting Vance for his statements in a rare foray into politics.

https://twitter.com/yashar/status/1816310489980494197

"I truly can’t believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States," the video text read. "All I can say is… Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day. I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too."

Aniston herself struggled with fertility difficulties, undergoing IVF and other treatments for a time in her late 30s and into her 40s. Her attempts to get pregnant were ultimately unsuccessful. She is more of a dog lady, however.

Vance has since doubled down during an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show last week. “Obviously, it was a sarcastic comment,” he said. "I’ve got nothing against cats.”

https://twitter.com/KamalaHQ/status/1816884505942065601

“People are focusing so much on the sarcasm and not on the substance of what I actually said. And the substance of what I said, I’m sorry, it’s true.”

Here’s why ‘Monday Left Me Broken Cat’ a.k.a Mr Peebles, Is a TikTok icon https://www.dailydot.com/memes/monday-left-me-broken-cat-meme/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 18:07:36 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1628941 cat/human face of the monday left me broken cat meme

Monday Left Me Broken Cat, also known as Mr. Peebles, is a yellow-eyed cat with very human features who was animated in the Revive app to look like it's singing. The first iteration of the meme features Mr Peebles singing "Waiting For Love" by Avicii.

Cat memes are a favorite of the internet at large. It's no surprise that this particular one is speaking to all the forlorn and defeated folks out there who want to sing it out.

Why did Monday leave the cat broken?

monday left me broken cat gif

Mr Peebles earned his other unique moniker because of the original edit. The lyrics of the song go, "Monday left me broken // Tuesday, I was through with hoping // Wednesday, my empty arms were open // Thursday, waiting for love, waiting for love."

The cat's sullen facial expression led to its association with the first line of those lyrics. The Revive App animated the cat's face to look like it was singing the tune. The head bops along as it sings. The ears don't move in sync with it due to the limitations of the face-animating app. Still, it emits a particular vibe many identify with.

The first time the Monday Left Me Broken Cat appeared on TikTok was in February 2023. The video, posted by @beast_warrior, amassed two million views.

‘Was he alive when you brought him in?’: Pet owner issues warning about the vet after failed diagnosis https://www.dailydot.com/news/animal-hospital-cant-diagnose-cat/ Sat, 20 Jul 2024 05:17:50 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1620149 Cat owner issues warning on Miami vet after nightmare experience

When your pet is sick and you don't know why, you experience a panic like no other. You take your beloved animal to the vet and hope for the best. And, at the end of the day, you trust that you'll do their job and keep you informed.

But is your vet keeping you in the loop?

TikToker Summer Jones (@901sumo), from Memphis, Tennessee, is claiming that when she took her cat, Tommy, into the VCA Aventura Animal Hospital and Pet Resort in Aventura Florida, she was ultimately misinformed as to his problems.

Jones compiled her complaints in a video she posted to her TikTok account this month. The call-out has since gone on to rack up over 1.7 million views.

"Do NOT take your animal to this vet hospital," she tells her viewers, identifying a Google screenshot of the VCA Animal Hospital with a Florida address.

Jones claims that she took her cat, Tomm, to the vet and received a diagnosis of an ear infection. Jones says she followed the suggested treatment regimen but brought Tommy back because "he wasn't using [his front feet]. Like he wasn't walking at all; he was crawling. I said that's not normal."

Its website states, "VCA Aventura Animal Hospital and Pet Resort is a full-service veterinary medical facility." The hospital provides multiple services including, chemotherapy, EKGs, Ultrasounds, and other "diagnostic imaging."

A vet visit to forget

Jones claims she agreed to a set of X-rays costing $600, with two-hour results. She says the hospital never called.

She claims that she called the clinic an hour before closing time. "Mind you, dropped {Tommy} off at 12 [or] one, whatever, I called them."

She claims the receptionist asked her, "Was he alive when you brought him in?"

Jones then stares incredulously at the camera. She states she replied, "Yes he was. When can I come pick up my baby?"

Jones claimed they released Tommy to her and said they would call back when they had information regarding his X-Rays. Jones claims she later talked to a vet at the hospital who recommended she "talk to a neurologist."

However, Jones says the neurologist's number despite assurances by the vet that the front desk would contact her.

She claims two days passed before she reached out again. "I'm not going to bust their phone on the first day, I'm going to wait and see if they send it on the second day."

Jones claims she contacted the office after two days and stated, "You need to have my number down and have a manager call me immediately."

"And if I don't get a call from a manager, within a certain time period I'm going to come up there," she claims she told the front desk.

Jones says that despite the message she received no message. However, she claims an explanation for Tommy's behavior reached her, unlooked for, from the internet.

As diagnosed on TikTok

"An organization on TikTok saw Tommy and knew exactly what he had," Jones claims. "Not a hundred percent sure but he did definitely showed signs of having FIP."

Feline Infectious Peritonitis "is a viral disease of cats caused by certain strains of a virus called the feline coronavirus," according to the Cornell Feline Health Center. According to VCA's own website, "the first signs of illness may be very vague. Listlessness, lethargy, decreased or absent appetite, weight loss, and a fluctuating fever are commonly reported clinical signs."

The site also notes that FIP is "particularly difficult to diagnose. There may be abnormalities in a routine blood analysis, but none are specific for FIP."

Jones claims that Rags To Riches Animal Rescue reached out to her via social media and provided her with free medication for Tommy.

The Cornell Feline Health Center states that FIP "is usually progressive and almost always fatal without therapy that has been available in countries Australia and the UK for several years and has recently become available as an oral compounded formulation in the US."

"How is it that a page on TikTok seen videos of Tommy and knew exactly what it was and was able to connect me with resources within a few hours; got the medication within two hours of speaking with them?" Jones asks her viewers.

"But when I take him to y'all's vet, y'all don't know what's going on? But you're quick to recommend me to a neurologist that's $5,000?"

Jones' claims video gathered plenty of support in the comments.

"I’m so glad you found an organization to help! Not all hospitals & clinics are good, unfortunately," Introvert Jacque (@introvertedjacque) wrote.

Another viewer commented, "As a vet receptionist this is heartbreaking. Taking notes and contacting clients back asap is soo important."

"Took my shepherd to an er vet bc she wasn't acting right. Kept her 2 days, $$$ later, no answer still. Took her to her reg vet & found out same day she had cancer. Had they done tx she'd still be here," Sunflowerlover (@sunfloweredangel).

The Daily Dot reached out to VCA Aventura Animal Hospital & Pet Resort for comment and received the following reply from Misty Holbert, Senior Director, External Communications on behalf of the company:

“The care of pets is our highest priority, and we take client feedback, in addition to harassment, very seriously. The results of our initial review do not align with what has been shared. We have a zero-tolerance policy for threatening behavior. We always aim to create client/hospital relationships built on mutual trust and respect but unfortunately that trust was degraded here and our Associates felt unsafe. The diagnosis that we shared with our former client about their pet was thorough and although the delivery of the updates was not immediate, we will always err on the side of due diligence for the sake of medical quality.”

@901sumo Rags To Riches Animal Rescue is the page that helped me. They are the ones who reached out, gave me answers and immediate help. Please spread the word about this vet. The treatment Tommy and I received at this facility was absolutely ridiculous. This is my son ya’ll are messing with. I do not play about mine. #foryoupage #capcut #educationalpurposes ♬ original sound - Summer Jones

We have sent up a follow-up request to VCA to address their accusations of harassment and threatening behavior.

In a video posted a day after the incident, Jones states that Tommy is "doing better and fighting so hard."

The Daily Dot has reached out to Jones via TikTok messenger and comment for further comments.

Cat owner issues warning on Miami vet after nightmare experience

‘I am going to have to pay a bunch of vet bills’: Target customer issues dire warning on Kindfull cat food https://www.dailydot.com/news/target-kindfull-cat-food-warning/ Sat, 06 Jul 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1615785 Target customer issues dire warning on Kindfull cat food

When making decisions about how to feed a pet, the marketing and branding of a food product can muddle choices about what will truly be best for each animal.

Even well-regarded brands can have unintended reactions if an aspect of their formulation disagrees with their constitution, as one Target customer says she found out from purchasing the store's Kindfull wet cat food.

In a video posted to TikTok, content creator Emma Pardy (@eepardy on TikTok) says her cats were peeing blood and throwing up after eating it one time.

"This is a PSA that if you have a cat right now, do not buy them Target brand Kindfull wet food," she says in the video. "Yes, I'm going to put the name of the cat food on blast, I don't give a sh*t, do not buy them that. I just dropped my cat off at the vet because she is peeing blood. My sister's cat is throwing up after eating it and I've never experienced that with them eating food before."

She says she chose the specific variety of Kindfull food for her cats because she was drawn in by the label, which claimed to be formulated for indoor cats, free of carrageenan, which is a thickening agent linked to colon cancer, and made with "real" chicken that the TikToker says she does not believe is actually chicken. Prior to feeding her cats the Kindfull wet food, she says she never had any issues with her cats eating any sort of food, and that it was the only change she had made in their diet.

The wet food was also not part of their regular diet, she says, as they were on a consistent diet of dry cat food from Costco. The Kindfull food was for a special occasion, she said, and the cats only ate it the one time.

"My cat's going to be OK," she says. "She only peed blood twice, so we caught it early. It's also a lot more fatal in male cats to have urinary blockages, so if you have a male cat, especially don't feed them this brand, but if you do try a new brand always pay attention to how they react to it because your time is limited if they do have a urinary blockage."

@eepardy Addressing comments: This video is no hate AT ALL towards wet food, this is purely to call out KINDFULL because it hurt my cats as well as MANY other people’s cats. There is a clear connection. It caused one cat to throw up instantly and the other cat to pee blood. And FYI, there were no blockages. Her dry food/pumpkin diet are doing just fine for her (me a my vet know my cat better than you!). Ive done my research before, Billie has been on a wet food diet before, we like wet food! Again, I never said wet food is bad so idk why yall are up in arms in the comments. I only talked about their diet purely to show that theyve been on a consistent diet that they have never had issues with, and right when I added in this ONE new thing, issues started happening immediately. Ive tried multiple other wet food brands and this is the ONLY one that caused issues for my cats. And please do your research because the same exact thing has happened to other people’s cats after eating Kindfull. My cat went viral a couple days ago and I have a lot of cat lovers on my page right now, so all I wanted to do was spread the message about the poor quality of this brand. #greenscreen #cats #catsoftiktok #catlover #cattok #petsoftiktok #catfood ♬ original sound - Emma Pardy

The Daily Dot has reached out to Emma via comment on the video as well as TikTok direct message, and to Target via email regarding the video.

In a follow-up video, Emma shows her cat has returned home safely from the vet, and was recovering from the experience with the assistance of painkillers.

Viewers weigh in

Some viewers shared that they had mixed levels of success feeding their own pets food from the Kindfull brand.

"My cats HATEEDDDDDD the kindful cat treats and they eat anything," one commenter wrote.

"But my cat has been eating the dry kind full food for like 3 years and has been fine," another said. "I’m scared."

"Okay. But the dry food changed my cats for the better," a user said. "No issues at all. Hopefully it’s just the wet food."

Others suggested that the issues her cats experienced could be from their dry food diet, which can contribute to urinary tract issues if not supplemented with additional moisture and vitamins. However, the poster says she regularly adds pumpkin puree to her cats' dry food to add the moisture and vitamins back into their diet.

"On a separate note UTs are way more common in cats that only eat dry food so it’s really important to incorporate the moisture into their diet," one commenter wrote.

"Please find a wet food that works for them," another advised. "i know this experience was scary but tiki cat is amazing! cats need the extra hydration and protein."

"I’m not a vet but I had a similar sitch - got my cat a 'special' can of wet food," a commenter wrote. "He usually has wet food but all I did was get a different brand and that was enough to cause a UTI. My take away was that it wasn’t the brand of food necessarily that caused the UTI, it was the sudden shift in his usual consumption. They have sensitive systems and I guess can’t have 'fun' random treats like us."

‘Only at Chick-fil-A would they even notice’: Chick-fil-A worker notices something unusual underneath customer’s car in drive-thru https://www.dailydot.com/news/chick-fil-a-drive-thru-cat-under-car/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 01:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1603380 Someone looking under a car(l+r), Chick-fil-a(c)

A Chick-fil-A worker noticed something unusual underneath a customer’s car in the drive thru. The worker and the customer were stunned to find that the unusual thing was a cat.

TikTok user @woooooozy was recently at Chick-fil-A when the drive-thru attendant noticed something weird going on under the car. Being extraordinarily helpful, as Chick-fil-A staff have a reputation of being, the worker alerted @woooooozy and took a closer look at the car’s wheel. That’s when she found a cat.

To the tune of “Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter, the video shows the tail end of a black cat lodged behind the wheel of the car. The video’s text overlay reads, “Please please please tell me the chick fil a worker is kidding when she says there’s a cat stuck in my car when I’m in the drive thru.”

The video has amassed 294,000 views as of Wednesday morning. In the caption, @woooooozy writes, “Who does this even happen to.”

In the comments, one user questioned whether this is part of the famous Chick-fil-A hospitality training program. They wrote, “‘It’s my pleasure to get this cat out of your car for you.’” Another user agreed, saying, “Only at Chick-fil-A would they even notice.”

@woooooozy Who does this even happen to 😭😭 #storytime #crazystory #cat #catrescue #fyp #fypp #fypシ゚viral #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp ♬ Please Please Please - Sabrina Carpenter

Someone else answered the question posed in the caption. “This happened to my mom and I.. we now have a cat with no tail living in our house,” they wrote.

Another user asked, “Did the cat get out.” @woooooozy replied, “Yes we had to spray water to losen the cat and then it escaped.”

Maybe someone will find the cat and adopt it. One user wrote, “before we adopted her, a humane society worker found my cat stuck in a car wheel wail. paws burned. adopting her was the best decision. she is the sweetest most grateful cat ever!”

Cats being found on wheels is very common

A Reddit user posted a picture of a kitten in a similar position a couple of years ago. One user wrote, "It's like cats purposefully try to hide in the most dangerous places. Have personally seen a cat get killed because they crawled under the hood of a car." Another said, "he was there to ask about your extended car insurance."

Why do cats go under cars?

Cats typically go under cars during cold weather. “A warm car offers shelter, warmth, and an enclosed space that suits their needs perfectly despite being a big inconvenience for us,” Catser notes. “Cats like to feel enclosed as they feel safer when covered from all angles.”

Cats can get injured or killed if they are in the hood of a car while it’s being driven. That’s why it’s important for drivers to check their cars before starting them in colder temperatures.

The Daily Dot reached out to @woooooozy via TikTok comment and direct message for comment.

Embrace kitty vibes with the one-of-a-kind calico hair trend https://www.dailydot.com/pop-culture/what-is-calico-hair-cats/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 20:18:57 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1597687 Calico hair explainer

From silky smooth liquid hair to striking skunk stripes, there's no shortage of trendy hair inspiration. But what if you're looking for something a little more out there, say, an autumnal Practical Magic vibe meets early aughts chunky highlights? Try calico hair.

If you've ever wanted to match with a calico cat, this is the perfect hair trend to try.

How does calico hair take inspiration from calico cats?

Okay, let's first give those less versed in feline matters a quick primer. What exactly is a calico cat? Calico cats don't belong to a specific breed per se — they're basically cats with a tri-color coat of white, black, and orange. When it comes to color distribution, calicos are usually a bit more white than black or orange.

Calico cats are pretty rare, and calico hair can also give humans a pretty one-of-a-kind look. The hair trend takes inspiration from the calico cat’s fur colors, featuring thick ginger, brunette, and blonde stripes. See a direct example here:

You can have many different variations of calico hair, including styles where the blonde stripes specifically frame the face or ones where the colors are more blended out.

Some people even spring for bold horizontal stripes.

Although calico hair can be a bit divisive (just peek at this Reddit thread here), it’s undeniably unique.

When did the trend start?

The idea of giving your hair highlights and coloring it isn't exactly new. But this hair trend had some of its earliest buzz in the fall of 2023, when hair enthusiasts shared videos of themselves with ginger, brown, and blonde hair for a warm and fun spooky season style.

Calico hair really took off in spring 2024 — when its momentum started picking up, even Miley Cyrus flaunted a more blended take on the bold style for a W Magazine shoot

One of the most viral videos on calico hair was officially posted on New Year’s Day of 2024. TikTok user Madeline (@madelineemay) showed herself DIY-ing calico hair and garnered a whopping 6.9 million views for her chaotic hair-bleaching process and silly commentary.

“I only wanted to bleach some parts ombré because I am extra, and I don’t know if it’s going to look good, but I wanna look like a calico cat,” the creator said. Her hair credentials? According to her, she took AP Art in high school.

"Oh my God, is that a woman or a cat?" she joked at the end of her video.

As you can see, it's possible to go down the DIY route to try out calico hair. If you're looking for more calico hair guidance, TikTok user Sydney Lou (@sydneylouwho99) has some tips.

"This is for all the calico hair girlies out there. I have a simple life hack for you because I think I've perfected the technique. All you have to do is start with natural, basically jet black Asian hair, and then just bleach it yourself," Sydney explained. "Do it poorly with bleach and developer that you probably should have thrown out six months ago. Be sure to try foils and then make sure that they slip out halfway through. Have your boyfriend help you, and then just trust him."

She's being sarcastic, by the way.

It’s probably the soundest idea to have a hairdressing professional give you calico hair, especially because color correcting and bleeding can become major issues with this style.

Calico hair explainer

Cats are having eerie reactions to the sounds of Ancient Egypt on TikTok https://www.dailydot.com/pop-culture/cats-react-to-ancient-egypt-sounds/ Wed, 05 Jun 2024 20:52:37 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1591675 cats ancient egypt Three split of cats

If you peaked in high school, you know the feeling: the sounds of your school bell, the smell of the cafeteria meatloaf, the touch of the dodgeball against the back of your neck. These are sensory memories that remind you of a greater time. Well, for cats, that time was ancient Egypt.

How good of an era for cats was ancient Egypt? For one, they were believed to be magical creatures, able to bring good luck to those who own them. Painting upon painting was lovingly done for each and every cat breed. Cats were also dressed in gold and jewels while being allowed to eat off a human’s plate. (No word on if they were fed Fancy Feast or the store brand, though.)

And that’s just in life – if a cat freaking died in ancient Egypt, they received the honor of mummification. Additionally, any human involved in their death (even just being around for their death) was sentenced to death themselves. Hardcore. No wonder modern cats demand being worshiped on their more modest days.

TikTok plays 'sounds from Ancient Egypt' for their cats

Yes, it was a good time and place to be a cat. And it seems like the cats miss it. Users on TikTok have been playing sounds of ancient Egypt for their cats and receiving very-specific reactions.

“This is supposed to remind cats of how they were worshiped in ancient Egypt,” reads the caption on these videos. From the look of the cat’s reaction, it absolutely did. Something shifted in that feline brain, for sure.

Videos of cats reacting

It seems clear enough that these cats are not just reacting to any old noise. There’s a specific alertness in their eyes; a care, an investment rarely scene by the typically aloof furballs.

Meme History: Woman Yelling At Cat https://www.dailydot.com/video/meme-history-woman-yelling-at-cat/ Sun, 12 May 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1573805 Woman Yelling At Cat Meme

In December 2011, mid-way through season 2 of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, the cast attended a party hosted by Brandi Glanville in Malibu.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM7_OZ5X71c&ab_channel=TheDailyDot

To say the least, it did not go well—because Camille, who was going through a divorce with Kelsey Grammar at the time, had recently outed the abuse that Taylor Armstrong was going through at the hands of her husband, Russell. At the time a lot of the details of that abuse had not been made public yet, so the show and the media made it seem like Taylor was overreacting.

The day after the original airing, The Daily Mail published a recap detailing all the drama, and which included this screenshot from the episode

Six and a half years later, in a completely unrelated corner of the internet, a much cuter, and far less dark phenomenon was emerging.

Meet Smudge the cat

In June of 2018 Tumblr user “deadbeforedeath” posted an image of Smudge sitting at a dinner table, looking not amused at all. The caption? “he no like vegetals.” Within a year, this post gained upwards of 50,000 likes and reblogs.

Smudge was cute enough to develop a following outside of Tumblr. If one simply Google image searches “confused cat at dinner table meme” one is served all kinds of options to buy T-shirts, stickers, and hoodies of all shapes and sizes featuring the feline.

He then earned his own Instagram account titled “smudge_lord.” It has 1.6 million followers as of the writing of this video, and is full of sass, cuteness, and general cat-hilarity.

People had been posting both confused cat memes, and ones made from The Daily Mail’s screenshot of Taylor back in the day, separately, until in 2019, Twitter user @MISSINGEGIRL realized how perfectly they go together

Merging and morphing into an indivisible object labeling meme, the new “Woman Yelling at a Cat” meme quickly spread to Reddit—with multiple posts gaining five-digit upvote counts in mere days. It’s now ubiquitous everywhere memes are consumed, and losing the referent, works as a great subject-object joke.

In the left panel, we typically have our “Subject A” who is upset with “Subject B” for some reason. And in the right panel we have “Subject B” who, like any self-respecting cat, could not care any less if they tried.

It appears that Taylor is actually a fan of the memes, and that in the years since her appearance on the show, she and Camille have made up. When The Daily Dot wrote about how people were turning the meme into their Halloween costume, Taylor retweeted the article and then tweeted at Camille.

https://twitter.com/TaylorArmstrong/status/1188577100430577664

https://twitter.com/TaylorArmstrong/status/1188583268834107392
So all in all, it's a relatively happy ending for almost everyone involved. The internet got another in a long line of fun memes to play around with, and the ladies in Beverly Hills seem to be at peace with one another.

Smudge, however, still doesn’t like his vegetals.

‘Stop ripping people off’: Customer catches Purina falsely advertising the amount of cat food in a can https://www.dailydot.com/news/purina-cat-food-false-advertising/ Fri, 10 May 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1573436 A cat food customer and animal rescue worker has called out Purina for falsely advertising the amount of cat food in a can.

As grocery prices rise, customers are starting to feel the pinch. Shoppers are feeling more pressure than ever to make sure that every single penny counts, and as a result, are less inclined to let something like "shrinkflation" slide.

What's Shrinkflation?

Shrinkflation describes the business practice where items decrease in size and quantity while the price stays the same. But according to a TikToker, straight-up dishonesty about how much product is actually present takes things one step further, especially when it spreads to cat food.

"Hey, Purina. Did you really think we weren't going to notice that you started putting less food in and just filling the space in with some liquid?" one TikToker challenged in a video that's amassed 455,500 views as of Friday. "The cans still says it has five and a half ounces in it. However, it doesn't have five and a half ounces of food."

To prove her point, creator and animal rescue worker @allsoulsconnected spooned the Purina cat food onto a scale to measure how its actual weight differs from what is advertised.

"Four and a half ounces of food is what's in that can," she announced. "Not five and a half. It's an entire ounce [missing]. The rest is liquid."

Speaking directly to Nestle, the makers of Purina, she continued, "Stop ripping people off. I run a rescue and [trap neuter return] program. We feed a lot of cats, stray cats, abandoned cats, rescued cats. Every single penny counts, don't you think it's time you take a step back and maybe get a conscience and see what you're really doing and who you're hurting? People are struggling to pay their bills [..] stop doing this."

@allsoulsconnected I’ve been noticing for a bit that the Friskies pate cans were not full and had extra liquid in them and decided to see if they were lying about how much food was in the cans… #purina #friskies #corporategreed #pricegauging #Greedflation #StopCorporateGreed #puregreed #ripoff #catfood #petfood ♬ original sound - All Souls Connected

The Daily Dot reached out to Purina for comment and the creator via email.

Shrinkflation in the wild

This isn't the first time a TikToker has gone viral for exposing shrinkflation. A Costco customer found that a 2-pound bag of Kettle crinkle cut chips actually measured up at 1 pound, 2 ounces, while a Walmart customer was furious to discover that a chicken labeled 4.92 pounds weighed just 2.2 pounds.

There are numerous examples of this happening across the country at different stores, which suggests that customers are no longer willing to take false advertising lying down.
