Vance (r)

Right-wingers online are miffed Jennifer Aniston criticized Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance for claiming in 2021 that the U.S. was being run by "childless cat ladies."

Aniston weighed in on a recirculating Fox News clip from 2021 where Vance complained that "we're effectively run in this country, via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too."

Vance—who at the time was running for Senate—specifically called out Vice President Kamala Harris, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for not having children.

“And it’s just a basic fact—you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC—the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children," Vance said. "And how does it make any sense that we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”

Harris does not have biological children but has been a stepmother for nearly ten years. Buttigieg, at the time of Vance's remarks, was in the process of trying to adopt. The Buttigiegs announced the birth of their adopted twins in September 2021.

The Friends star wrote on her Instagram story Wednesday: “I truly can't believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States."

"Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day," she continued. "I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too."

In June, Vance, along with the vast majority of Republican senators, blocked The Right to IVF Act, which would have codified the right to in vitro fertilization and lowered its cost.

Republicans criticized the bill as an election-year stunt, though Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Katie Britt (R-Ala.) did introduce a competing bill. That bill did not move forward due to opposition by one of The Right to IVF Act's sponsors, who argued it would create burdensome requirements that would force IVF clinics to close.

Aniston does not have any children but previously spoke out in a 2022 cover story for Allure about undergoing multiple rounds of IVF.

“I was trying to get pregnant. It was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road,” Aniston said.

She added: "I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it. I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.’ You just don’t think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed.”

In the wake of Aniston's criticism, fans of Vance are hitting back hard—and some are even targeting the actress for lacking children.

"Jennifer Aniston is 55 years old, childless, and miserable," wrote one X account.

"LMAO Jennifer Aniston should've found someone when she was in her prime," sniped another. "Too bad so sad.. Have fun with your cats."

"Jennifer Aniston is an attractive woman. She's also got psychological & personality problems," someone else asserted. "That's why every man she's ever entered a relationship with left her & never looked back. Her opinion of Trump & Vance isn't worth shit."

Right-wing commentator Ian Miles Cheong took a swipe at Aniston too, saying, "Oh no, the cat ladies are offended."

But many others did not hesitate to defend Aniston and echo her criticism.

"Jennifer Aniston has dogs. Not cats," quipped one person.

"I have been trying to warn every conservative man I know - these JD comments are activating women across all sides, including my most conservative Trump supporting friends," said Meghan McCain. "These comments have caused real pain and are just innately unchristian. This is not who we are."

Echoed someone else: "Childless cat lady rhetoric and going against IVF might just pave the way to lose the elections. These men have completely underestimated how triggering women’s fertility journeys have been. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned - and who could not have children…"

Rachel Zegler was seated next to Jennifer Aniston at the People’s Choice Awards—here’s why it’s a deeply meta moment https://www.dailydot.com/pop-culture/rachel-zegler-jennifer-aniston-peoples-choice-awards-2024/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 04:15:27 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1528684 rachel zegler jennifer aniston

The 49th Annual People’s Choice Awards aired this weekend, and all kinds of stars showed up and showed out to celebrate the people and their various pop culture-related choices.

One such star was Rachel Zegler, who took home the award for Action Movie Star of the Year for her role as Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

https://twitter.com/THR/status/1759408815324471578

Another star in attendance was Jennifer Aniston, who presented the Icon Award to her close friend and co-star, Adam Sandler, before taking home an award herself for TV Drama Star for her role as Alex Levy on The Morning Show.

https://twitter.com/THR/status/1759402998277476421

And—in an interesting moment of meta seating arrangements—Rachel and Jennifer were seated side-by-side at the same table for the entire length of the ceremony.

And why, you ask, is this fact in any way, shape, or form “meta?”

Well you see, my dear reader, Rachel is—quite literally—named after Jennifer Aniston’s beloved character Rachel Green from Friends, a factoid she recently shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon during her press tour for the aforementioned Hunger Games prequel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8Asp0evDbo

When directly asked about the naming rumor by Jimmy, Rachel confirmed it, saying, “I was named after Rachel Green from Friends. That is real. That is a real fact, and nobody ever believes me because they think that there’s no way that I’m young enough to be named after [a character from Friends], but I am!”

She goes on to explain that her mother simply "loved the way [the name] sounded on Friends for Jennifer Aniston" and even joked that, if "Rachel" hadn't panned out, she "could've been been named 'Ross,' who knows!"

Naturally, fans of both actors were quick to point out the delightful moment, hoping that Rachel’s mom is getting a kick out of the seating arrangement:

https://twitter.com/districtshields/status/1759397738347733167

So, there you have it. But still, I'm going to need to see some sort of official reaction from Rachel's mom because I love a full-circle moment.

Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston spark controversy over antisemitism and cultural misunderstandings on Instagram https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/jamie-foxx-jennifer-aniston-antisemitism/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 14:34:19 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1375036 Jamie Foxx (l) Jennifer Aniston (r)

"I want to apologize to the Jewish community and everyone who was offended by my post," wrote Jamie Foxx in an Instagram post on Sunday. "I now know my choice of words have caused offense and I'm sorry."

This apology arrived after a weekend of backlash surrounding an earlier Instagram post from Foxx—and a divisive reply by Jennifer Aniston.

In the original post, Foxx wrote, "THEY KILLED THIS DUDE NAME JESUS...WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY'LL DO TO YOU???! #fakefriends #fakelove."

This led some commenters—including the Jewish news site A Wider Frame—to accuse Foxx of antisemitism. These detractors interpreted his post as a reference to the antisemitic trope of Jewish deicide, blaming all Jewish people for the death of Jesus.

Since screenshots of the post showed a "like" from Jennifer Aniston, some people also accused Aniston of antisemitism by association. Responding on Instagram stories, she wrote, "This really makes me sick. I did not ‘like’ this post on purpose or by accident." She added, "I do NOT support any form of antisemitism."

However, this only fanned the flames of the controversy.

The real meaning of 'they killed Jesus'

On Black Twitter, numerous people argued that the phrase "they killed Jesus" has a different meaning among Black Americans. It refers to specifically Judas' betrayal, with no antisemitic connotations. This interpretation lined up with the way Jamie Foxx hashtagged his original post with #fakefriends.

Then in his apology statement, Foxx wrote, "To clarify, I was betrayed by a fake friend and that's what I meant with "they" not anything else."

https://www.twitter.com/carolinerenard_/status/1687870753969250304

https://twitter.com/QueenMab87/status/1687910681507467265

https://www.twitter.com/Nine2x/status/1687852790100471808

These differing interpretations sparked a wider discussion about cultural misunderstandings. Many commenters suggested that Aniston's post proved she must not have any Black friends. She also faced backlash for taking such a harsh stance in the first place, failing to give Foxx the benefit of the doubt. Foxx also has no history of making antisemitic remarks elsewhere.

https://www.twitter.com/Needle_of_Arya/status/1687991681281359872

So in her hasty attempt to avoid being seen as antisemitic, Jennifer Aniston wound up being accused of anti-Black racism instead.

This TikToker is a dead ringer for Jennifer Aniston https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/jennifer-aniston-doppelganger-tiktok/ Fri, 02 Jul 2021 16:42:12 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1106540 Rachel from "Friends" with her eyes squinted as she gestures, woman with similar expression (inset)

There are plenty of celebrity doppelgängers all over TikTok, but one woman who looks just like Jennifer Aniston might just take the cake.

Lisa Tranel, who posts on TikTok as @she_plusthree, doesn’t always embrace the aspects of her celebrity lookalike in her videos. Most of her videos involve lip-syncing to dialogue or dancing, but she does acknowledge her resemblance to Aniston: Her TikTok bio simply reads, “Not Jennifer Aniston 😂.”

But in her latest video, that changed. Tranel, who’s sitting in a car, lip-syncs along to a bit of dialogue from the season 3 Friends episode “The One Where Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister.” Tranel, naturally is stepping into the role of Rachel Green, aka the character Aniston played on the series, who is contemplating quitting her terrible job at Fortunata Fashions.

“Oh, I wanna quit, but then I think I should stick it out,” Rachel says, which Tranel replicates in the lip-sync video. “Then I think, why would such a person stay in such a demeaning job just because it's remotely related to the field they're interested in?”

https://www.tiktok.com/@she_plusthree/video/6979637838362987781?sender_device=pc&sender_web_id=6900943631025178117&is_from_webapp=v1&is_copy_url=0

It’s not just her looks that really sells it, it’s also how she conveys the mix of emotions Rachel is feeling in that particular scene.

“I actually thought it was Jennifer Anniston,” one person commented. “Wow!!”

Another person suggested tagging the real Aniston, to which Tranel replied “I’m 100% down with that!”

Celebrity doppelgängers are seemingly everywhere on TikTok. Many of those videos are set to the song “Back Up (feat. Big Sean)” by DeJ Loaf. The videos are usually marked by comments about how much they look like a particular celebrity before the person turns around to reveal their face. (Per The Atlantic, some of those videos incorporate the use of a special effect in the TikTok app called “Face Tracking.”

But if Aniston was to respond to Tranel’s TikTok video, it wouldn’t be the first time for a celebrity to engage with one of their doppelgängers. Within the past year, TikToker @poliakov71 posted a video that showcased how much she looked like Rihanna, prompting the real Rihanna to comment, “where the album sis?”

Jennifer Aniston roasted for ‘our first pandemic’ Christmas ornament https://www.dailydot.com/irl/jennifer-aniston-pandemic-ornament-instagram/ Sun, 27 Dec 2020 15:53:27 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=917774 jennifer aniston pandemic ornament instagram

Jennifer Aniston sparked a backlash online for sharing a Christmas ornament engraved with the message, “Our first pandemic 2020.”

The post showcasing the ornament—shared to her Instagram Story—didn’t specify whether the decoration was her own. Still, she’s facing a firestorm online from fans and social media users roasting her for making light of a pandemic that has killed over 300,000 people in the U.S.

The ornament is a custom-made design sold by an Etsy shop called Rustic Raleigh owner, Brittany Sutton, told Insider on Sunday.

The image sparked mixed reactions. The majority of those weighing in, however, call out the actress for seeming to make light of the pandemic.

“‘Cheers to our first pandemic of 2020, where millions of people died! let’s celebrate that on a Christmas ornament!’” one Twitter user wrote.

Others, meanwhile, defended Aniston. Some said that she’s previously shared Instagram posts expressing empathy toward coronavirus victims. Aniston has also urged people to wear face masks and follow public health guidelines.

https://twitter.com/Canolanation/status/1342895254492602370

Aniston had not publicly responded to the criticisms or addressed whether the ornament was hers.

People are shipping Brad and Jen after this steamy moment during the ‘Fast Times’ table read https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/fast-times-table-read-brad-jen/ Fri, 18 Sep 2020 17:36:21 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=878376 fast times

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston reunited on Thursday night for a star-studded table read commemorating the 38th anniversary of the raunchy '80s teen comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And, in what will surely come as a huge surprise, fans are positively overcome with feelings.

The "Feelin’ A-Live" virtual event was organized by comedian Dane Cook to benefit Sean Penn's disaster relief nonprofit charity, CORE. Currently, the organization is focused on getting COVID-19 testing to vulnerable communities.

In addition to Pitt and Aniston, other stars included Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts, John Legend, Jimmy Kimmel, Ray Liotta, and Morgan Freeman, who narrated. Interestingly enough, Shia LaBeouf appeared as Sean Penn's stoner character Jeff Spicoli, while Penn made a cameo as "Pizza Guy," originally portrayed by the late Taylor Negron.

The inclusion of the famous exes had to have been intentionally mined for maximum awkwardness, as Aniston played the infamous Phoebe Cates character, Linda Barrett, while Pitt played Judge Reinhold's Brad Hamilton.

The NSFW dream sequence, in particular, made for some riveting entertainment, in which Brad imagines Linda seducing him as she rises out of the pool—only to have the real Linda accidentally interrupt Brad in an uncompromising position in the bathroom.

Aniston!! Pitt!!! Between this and the former couple's swoon-worthy interactions at the SAG Awards earlier this year, could it be any more clear that two people are still deeply in love and obviously meant to be together? Come on guys, this is just trolling now.

Brad Pitt clutching Jennifer Aniston’s hand sparks all the rumors https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/jennifer-aniston-brad-pitt-sag-awards/ Mon, 20 Jan 2020 13:47:52 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=695408 Jennifer Aniston Brad Pitt moment at SAG Awards

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt both won on Sunday at the SAG Awards, but the real winners were Twitter users who are absolutely enthralled with pictures of the two taken at the ceremony.

Aniston and Pitt were the couple in the early 2000s. They ended their marriage in 2005, and while it seems like the couple is over it, Twitter users sure aren't.

There are a few moments, in particular, that are making Twitter users hope that the couple is back together. (They aren't.)

At the event, Aniston won an award for her role in The Morning Show. During her acceptance speech, Pitt watched from backstage and was reportedly smiling as she spoke.

"Caught this pretty cool moment when Brad stopped and watched Jen win her SAG Award, he couldn't stop smiling," E! host Jason Kennedy wrote on Twitter along with a video.

https://twitter.com/JasonKennedy1/status/1219086180165222402?s=20

And then there's a part during Pitt's speech. As Pitt accepted his award for his part in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, he made a joke and Aniston was seen laughing and clapping at the quip.

https://twitter.com/NineDaves/status/1219079311535288320

But what's really breaking brains are a couple of photographs of Aniston and Pitt sharing a friendly moment at the awards show. One shows them laughing together, and the other shows him holding her hand as she walks away.

https://twitter.com/PopCraveMusic/status/1219150948616065024

When the pictures made their way onto Twitter, people began freaking out. Their names have been trending overnight.

"As someone who studied psychology for two days before quitting for criminology, I know this means he loves her and regrets everything," Twitter user @BrishanRae jokingly wrote alongside a zoomed-in picture of Pitt's and Aniston's hands.

So while Sunday night was a career-defining moment for both of the actors, people were really only interested in the possibility of a romantic reunion.

"Look. If I can get My Chemical Romance and the Jonas Brothers back together, I can definitely get Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston back together," musician Mark Hoppus wrote on Twitter. "2020 is the year I’m gonna make it happen."

Twitter users can only hope.

Apple TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ is a waste of money and star power https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/apple-tv-morning-show-review/ Tue, 29 Oct 2019 20:08:42 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=657726 apple tv morning show

Starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, The Morning Show is one of the flagship dramas premiering on Apple TV+ in November. At $15 million per episode—in other words, more than Game of Thronesit invests a lot of money and star power into what feels like a mediocre Aaron Sorkin wannabe from 2007.

The Morning Show

RELEASE DATE: 11/01/2019
CREATOR: Jay Carson
STREAMING: Apple TV+
Despite two A-list stars and a colossal budget, Apple TV's flagship drama feels dull and outdated.

As a female-led drama that begins with a #MeToo scandal, The Morning News is meant to be a relevant, contemporary show about news media and sexual harassment. It's toothless in both regards, paling in comparison to what we saw on The Good Wife over a decade ago; another feminist workplace drama. I can easily see this show vanishing from the cultural consciousness by 2020.

Alex Levy (Aniston) is the co-host of The Morning Show, a popular but banal breakfast news show filmed in New York. When her longtime co-host Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) is abruptly fired for sexual misconduct, it sends Alex's career into chaos, further disrupted by the arrival of a rebellious local TV journalist called Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), who goes viral for fighting a protester on camera. Alex is a cynical media insider at the top of her game, while Bradley is a spunky newcomer, inevitably destined to butt heads while the network searches for Alex's new onscreen partner.

This premise offers plenty of promising ideas about workplace sexism and news media in 2019, but the end result is pretty dull. For one thing, it has nothing interesting or new to say about sexual harassment or the TV industry; an embarrassing oversight when Succession is one of the hottest shows of the year. It also just feels incredibly dated. References to the internet are shallow and fleeting, which only adds to the general aura of an old Aaron Sorkin drama. For some reason, there's also a recurring Gilmore Girls reference, which is basically the opposite of topical.

Some viewers may be surprised to learn that despite Witherspoon and Aniston's comedy chops, The Morning Show is a solidly serious drama. Jokes are borderline nonexistent, and instead, we have numerous scenes where people yell (and I mean yell) angry speeches while having breakdowns about their careers. So along with being disappointingly shallow in terms of feminist commentary, this show also made me think, perhaps for the first time in my life, "Wow, will these women ever shut up?" Although in fairness, Steve Carrell also spends most of his time yelling and monologuing.

Mitch should only be in the show for one episode, creating a springboard for Alex's story. Instead, we keep returning to his struggle with becoming a #MeToo headline. He's a boring and unoriginal character, spouting the same things we've heard from every famous sexual harasser in America. The general idea is that because he only had workplace "affairs," he's not as bad as outright creeps and rapists. Which, sure. But the show doesn't (yet) delve into the murkiness of these affairs, where Mitch held all the power. Attempting a "both sides" viewpoint, Mitch argues that he deserves a comeback. His producer (Mark Duplass) replies with total sincerity: "I don't know what the half-life is for this, but it's not a day. It's years." I mean... is it, though? As of this week, Louis C.K. is making a comeback tour, and Harvey Weinstein is still being welcomed at industry events, calling a woman "rude" for confronting him in public. Celebrities like Ryan Seacrest, Michael Weatherly, and Chris Hardwick are still going strong. So are Mel Gibson and Chris Brown, for that matter. It feels almost insulting to focus on a man like Mitch whose defining issue is that he "isn't that bad," while also showing him lose his career and income.

It doesn't help that while Witherspoon and Aniston are consummate pros, the dialogue is pretty corny. "Remember the truth?!" Bradley demands in one scene. "Journalism? We're news people, Jones!" Later we get some glaringly on-the-nose commentary about the decline of TV, with Alex's boss (Billy Crudup) noting, "It's kinda funny how the whole world of broadcast could fall off a cliff in a few years." A needlessly smug line for an Apple TV streaming show. And anyway, it rings hollow because the titular Morning Show sucks. In the three episodes made available to review, it's hard to get invested in the future of such a vacuous journalistic institution.

The Morning Show was created by Jay Carson, Hillary Clinton's press secretary during her 2008 presidential bid, and a former political consultant for House of Cards. After leaving the show due to creative differences, Carson was replaced by Kerry Ehrin as showrunner, and Ehrin now has the sole writing credit. She's an experienced writer and producer, co-creating Bates Motel, and writing for numerous shows including Friday Night Lights and Boston Public. But even with a seasoned showrunner and A-list stars onboard, The Morning Show simply isn't distinctive.

At a guess, the target audience here is middle-aged (probably white) women who want to see a grown-up story with strong female leads. But this demographic is hardly underrepresented on TV. If you want prestige drama, you can watch Big Little Lies, or Sharp Objects, or Unbelievable. If you want something with more humor, there's Succession or The Good Fight, which covers similar material to The Morning Show, in a smarter and more entertaining way. The main thing The Morning Show has going for it is the cast, and with such extensive filmographies, you could easily just watch them in something else.

Jennifer Aniston and Ellen DeGeneres share a kiss in instant viral moment https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/jennifer-aniston-ellen-degeneres-kiss/ Tue, 29 Oct 2019 19:08:07 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=657901 ellen kissing jennifer aniston

All of our favorite '90s icons are smooching—and they're breaking the internet while they're at it.

Jennifer Aniston and Ellen DeGeneres, former titans of the '90s sitcom scene and enduring A-listers, shared a kiss on Monday when Aniston stopped by Ellen to promote her new AppleTV+ series, The Morning Show.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B4I3qpqBa0l/

This celeb spit-swapping was catalyzed by a kiss between DeGeneres and another '90s icon, shock jock Howard Stern. DeGeneres and Stern kissed when the talk radio mainstay appeared on the show in mid-October.

Aniston peppered DeGeneres with questions about the Stern smooch. "He just asked for the kiss," Ellen responded coyly. “I don’t normally just grab anyone who asks for a kiss.”

“When was the last time you kissed a guy?" Aniston asked.

"I kiss guys!" DeGeneres responded in mock exasperation. "I don’t make out with guys, but I kiss guys on the lips.” Then DeGeneres turned the tables, asking Aniston, “When was the last time you kissed a girl on the lips?”

"I don’t kiss girls on the lips," the Friends star responded. That's when DeGeneres leaned in and the two locked lips.

As soon as the kiss happened, DeGeneres knew they had a viral moment on their hands. "That's what they wanted to see," the talk show host remarked. "They've been wanting that for years."

It's an understatement to say that people were more interested in DeGeneres' kiss with Aniston than with Stern. Both the image and the video have gone massively viral.

While The Morning Show is getting mixed reviews, clearly this kiss isn't. As of Tuesday morning, the photo of DeGeneres and Aniston kissing had over 1.7 million likes on Instagram.

Jennifer Aniston had a finsta before officially joining Instagram https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/jennifer-aniston-finsta/ Thu, 17 Oct 2019 21:35:25 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=652752 jennifer_aniston_finsta

Jennifer Aniston had a “finsta” before her real Instagram broke the internet when she joined the platform on Tuesday.

The Friends star amassed over 12 million followers in just two days of joining. But before breaking the Guinness World Record for having the fastest account to gain 1 million followers, Aniston made a secret account to see what all the hype was all about.

“It was a stalker account,” Aniston said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday night. “When I was thinking about doing this, it was time to start to understand the world and sort of dip my toe into the social media world.”

Undoubtedly, Aniston would thrive on the social media platform with or without some prior Instagram experience. In Aniston's second post, she joked about how her account broke the internet.

"I swear I didn't mean to break it... Thank you guys for the kind, glitchy welcome," Aniston wrote, along with a video of her acting fed up with her new Insta-life.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3scmO3hAcK/

Her first-ever post was an ode to her beginnings: the very first reunion photo featuring the full cast of Friends. “And now we are Instagram FRIENDS too. Hi Instagram,” Aniston wrote.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3o8vWDhlOh/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=dlfix

Even with some "finsta" experience, Aniston told Kimmel she had not looked much into the platform. Aniston says she is trying to avoid getting sucked into the Instagram-obsessed lifestyle many famous stars tend to live.

"I'm trying to build content as they say," Aniston told Kimmel.

And it's the kind of content 12.6 million-plus followers want to see.
