Vice President Kamala Harris is developing a new fan base: white dudes.

As her presidential campaign ramps up, a group of white men formed a coalition known as "White Dudes for Harris."

The group plans to kick off Monday night via a virtual call that will feature speakers including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D), singer Josh Groban, actor Mark Hamill, and others.

"Together, we aren’t going to sit around and let the MAGA crowd bully other white guys into voting for a hateful and divisive ideology because we understand that under MAGA everyone loses," the RSVP page for Monday's call reads. "We know that as white dudes, we have both a strong, and positive role to play in America’s shared future, and it begins with all of us cutting through the MAGA crap and reminding the folks who have co-opted American symbols what America actually means."

White Dudes for Harris also launched a $35 hat with its slogan ahead of the meeting.

The group said that nearly 80,000 people have RSVP'd and it collectively raised more than $300,000 in support of Harris' campaign.

What do Democrats think about White Dudes for Harris?

Democratic influencers and those planning to attend the call praised the initial organizing.

"Tonight's call represents a promising attempt to create a movement and a permission structure to lift many white dudes out of the MAGA whirlpool they've gotten sucked into," wrote one person on X. "It will allow for tough but necessary conversations that can create healing, movement, and unity around Kamala Harris and Democratic candidates like her."

He continued: "The guys organizing tonight’s call were inspired by the Black women and men, as well as all the other folks, who've organized calls over the last week. White men haven't organized ourselves well around Democratic values, which has been detrimental to the country and our ability to win elections."

Joked the pro-Democrat account VoteDarkBrandon: "Folks—white boy summer is here," riffing on the right-wing attempts to claim the phrase.

At the same time, critics of Harris were quick to put the group on blast.

Some accounts posted images of transgender women while making fun of the initiative, while others took digs at the manliness of the attendees.

"White dudes for Harris?? The Democrats return to their segregationist roots," slammed one person.

"If you belong to 'White Dudes for Harris', you've turned in your man card and didn't even realize it," snarked someone else.

"These dudes would be melting down if there was a 'White Dudes for Trump,'" mused another person.

Asked one user: "How beta-male can you be?"

Elon Musk replies to Gavin Newsom’s criticism of AI Harris video with a Deez Nutz joke https://www.dailydot.com/debug/elon-musk-gavin-newsom-ai-kamala-harris-campaign-ad/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 17:09:48 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1634317 elon musk (l) gavin newsom (c) kamala harris (r)

X owner Elon Musk is feuding with California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) over an AI-generated campaign video that alters the speech of Vice President Kamala Harris.

On Friday, Musk promoted a video created by the right-wing YouTuber "Mr Reagan" that uses an AI voice generator to depict Harris calling President Joe Biden senile.

"I, Kamala Harris, am your Democrat candidate for president because Joe Biden finally exposed his senility at the debate," the AI audio says. "Thanks, Joe."

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1816974609637417112

The fake Harris goes on in the nearly two-minute-long video, which uses footage from a real Harris campaign ad, to refer to herself as "the ultimate diversity hire" before stating that any criticism of her is "both sexist and racist."

"I may not know the first thing about running the country but remember that's a good thing if you're a deep state puppet," the ad continues. "I had four years under the tutelage of the ultimate deep state puppet, a wonderful mentor, Joe Biden."

Although the text in Mr Reagan's post described the video as a "Kamala Harris Campaign Ad PARODY," the footage itself does not include any such disclaimers. And while many would argue that the audio content is unmistakably manipulated and satirical, critics, such as Newsom, took issue with the clip.

"Manipulating a voice in an 'ad' like this one should be illegal," Newsom wrote. "I'll be signing a bill in a matter of weeks to make sure it is."

https://twitter.com/GavinNewsom/status/1817768956754788440

The bill Newsom is referring to is known as "The Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act" and would require major online platforms to label certain content as "inauthentic, fake, or false" during election season. Election-related content deemed “materially deceptive" would be outright banned.

In response, Musk, as well as his right-wing supporters, flooded Newsom's replies.

Musk himself made reference to his testicles while criticizing Newsom's remarks.

"I checked with renowned world authority, Professor Suggon Deeznutz, and he said parody is legal in America," Musk said.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1817775398047937009

Musk followed up by issuing a poll to his more than 191 million followers asking whether Newsom should create an endowed chair at the University of California for the imaginary professor.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1817930449617850502

Ironically, as noted by the Verge, Musk's promotion of the altered video without context is actually in violation of X's policies.

Aside from Newsom, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) also pushed back on Musk by pointing to legislation aimed at curtailing such content.

"If Elon Musk and X let this go and don’t label it as altered AI content, they will not only be violating X’s own rules, they’ll be unleashing an entire election season of fake AI voice and image-altered content with no limits, regardless of party," Klobuchar said on Threads.

Reacting to the video, the Harris campaign argued in a statement that the "American people want the real freedom, opportunity and security Vice-President Harris is offering; not the fake, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump."

As it stands, Musk has not labeled the video as manipulated. Musk's post highlighting the video has already been viewed nearly 130 million times.

Kamala Harris Political Compass memes exist in the context of what has been https://www.dailydot.com/memes/kamala-harris-political-compass-meme/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 14:49:20 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1632999 kamala harris X political compass

The Kamala Harris political compass meme uses the traditional grid format but replaces political positions with pieces of Harris quotes. Social media users are taking the template and placing characters from popular media in each quadrant, as well as anything from Taylor Swift albums to medieval paintings.

The meme spread as part of the enthusiasm around the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden bowed out of the 2024 race following pressure from high-level Democrats and much of the public.

What is the Kamala Harris political compass meme?

This summer meme is a variation of the standard political compass meme format, a grid split into four quadrants with the ends of each axis labeled “left,” “right,” “authoritarian,” and “libertarian.” The Kamala Harris meme replaces these with “thinks she just fell out of a coconut tree,” “exists in the context,” “what can be,” and “burdened by what has been.”

These new labels reference statements made by Harris during political speeches that have become viral memes. The story about her mother and the coconut tree, and her habit of talking about “what can be, unburdened by what has been” have contributed to her reputation as a little bit weird and silly, making the Vice President relatable to all the messy ladies out there.

Origin of the political compass meme

Pace News LTD and political journalist Wayne Brittenden created and copyrighted the political compass we know today in 2001. Their website provides recommended reading to understand each of the four types of political thinking they’ve proposed: Authoritarian left, authoritarian right, libertarian left, and libertarian right.

The idea was that a set of 62 propositions could be used to categorize any individual, political party, or ideology, placing them somewhere on the grid based on how extreme or moderate they are in terms of economic and social policy.

Parodies of the political compass have appeared online since the early 2010s. Some of them attempt to describe the political attitudes of each quadrant in amusing and often biased terms, while others represent each with images of characters from popular media, celebrities, objects, other memes, or anything else imaginable.

The Kamala Harris political compass meme origins

The first use of the Kamala Harris political compass meme appeared on Twitter on July 24, 2024, by user @waldenmgreen. It makes use of two popular and highly meme quotes from Harris in speeches she gave at political events.

The one on the X-axis references the famous coconut tree quote from May 2023. Video footage of the speech in which Harris talked about something her mother liked to say was posted by the RNC Research account on Twitter to disparage her—a move that backfired spectacularly.

https://twitter.com/RNCResearch/status/1656330363151478784

“My mother used to—she would give us a hard time sometimes and she would say to us ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you,’” Harris says in the video.

Harris has used the phrase "what can be, unburdened by what has been" multiple times during her political career. Its use as a meme may originate from yet another blunder by RNC Research from December 17, 2023.

Meme spread

Followers of @waldenmgreen responded to her initial post with their versions of the Kamala Harris political compass meme as the week went on. It wasn't long before the meme's creator provided a template of the new grid to make things easier on their fans.

It took less than a day for Twitter users to move on from fictional characters and to other subjects, including very old paintings and books from the 90s.

Kamala Harris has announced that, if elected… https://www.dailydot.com/memes/kamala-harris-has-announced-that-if-elected-meme/ Fri, 26 Jul 2024 13:17:55 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1631865 Kamala Harris

The "Kamala Harris has announced that, if elected" meme is being used to joke about ridiculous platforms the Harris campaign could support in the 2024 election—usually as a stand-in for what the meme-poster wants to see in this world.

https://twitter.com/BenjaminJS/status/1816475754265489545

How did the meme start?

On July 22, President Joe Biden announced he was ending his campaign for president as the Democratic nominee. In his statement, he threw his support behind Kamala Harris, who has been his Vice President throughout his first term. The news was pretty shocking since Biden has been insisting he'd stay in the race despite a poor showing at his first 2024 presidential debate against Donald Trump and a waning track record with leftist voters.

The response online was intense, birthing thousands of memes in several categories (more on that below). A popular one begins with the phrase, “Kamala Harris has announced that, if elected," followed by something preposterous.

Or perhaps something reasonable, depending on your POV. But definitely not something that Kamala Harris is promising to ever do, whether she's elected or not.

Kamala Harris has announced that, if elected meme reading: she will ensure we get Mindhunter Season 3

Kamala Harris has announced that, if elected meme reading: she wlil bring back the miller lite vortex bottles

Kamala Harris has announced that, if elected meme reading: she will ensure that Barbarian gets an official physical media release

Kamala Harris has announced that, if elected meme about getting Spice World on Netflix

Other Kamala Harris memes

If that's not enough in the world of memes, there are plenty of other categories of Harris memes that might tickle your fancy.

There's “What can be, unburdened by what has been” and the "coconut tree meme," both of which come from a comment Harris made about living in the context of history. Then there is "Kamala is Brat," inspired by the popularity of Charli XCX's recent album Brat and by the singer's endorsement of the politician on X, formerly Twitter. If you want to exist more in the context of what has been, there's always the "Kamala Harris is a cop" meme, which refers to her history as a "tough on crime" prosecutor before becoming the Attorney General of California.

And then there's always where we are at right now in history, with the "Biden is dropping out" memes. Because he sure did.

What does ‘I’m So Julia’ mean? The Charli XCX lyric explained https://www.dailydot.com/memes/what-does-im-so-julia-mean-the-charli-xcx-lyric-explained/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 16:19:17 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1631611 Julia Fox (l) Charlie XCX (r)

"I'm everywhere, I'm so Julia" is a lyric from musical artist Charli XCX's hit track "360" off of her popular 2024 album Brat.

What does "I'm so Julia" mean?

In December 2023, Charli did an interview with actress and model Julia Fox. The song is a reference to Fox, who is something of a cultural icon who blew up following her role in Uncut Gems and a brief fling with Kanye West after his split from Kim Kardashian.

"I wrote this song, which is basically about how you [Julia Fox] started every trend of 2022,” Charlie explained. "'I’m everywhere. I’m so Julia,' as in, I’m the reference. I’m everywhere like Julia Fox is everywhere."

Fox seemed to get it. She even redefined the term, saying on the Zach Sang show that it means "just being that girl […] being confident, putting yourself out there, being out, being about, being the center of attention. Just being that b---h."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gZh6lcEjBk

Fox also made an appearance in the music video for "360," so she really is everywhere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJW-VvmRKsE

What are the "I'm so Julia" memes?

Usually, when people use the phrase as a joke, they're talking about someone popular or who is an "It Girl," like they themselves are the trend. They're everywhere, they're the moment, they're at the center of it all. Or they're talking about Julia Child, perhaps the most beloved Julia of all time.

So Julia

So Julia

So Julia

So Julia

What does "Brat Summer" mean?

After the album's release, people began joking about having a "Brat Summer," as a play on last year's "Hot Girl Summer," coined by rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Being a Brat is a much more grunge, gritty experience than we've enjoyed in quite some time. The color lime green is also very key to the aesthetic, which can be seen in many So Julia memes as well.

Charli told The News Movement, “It can go that way, like luxury. But it can also be so trashy. Just like a pack of cigs and a Bic lighter and like a strappy white top with no bra.”

"Kamala is brat"

On July 22, President Joe Biden announced he was halting his campaign for the next presidential election. He also put his support behind his Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting that she is the next best candidate in line for the Democratic nominee. A lot of liberals were pretty enthusiastic about the idea, including Charli XCX, who tweeted about Kamala Harris being "brat."

https://twitter.com/charli_xcx/status/1815182384066707861

Partly spurred by Charli and partly by the joy of mashing memes, a lot of people started combining their favorite Harris memes with their favorite Brat memes.

Tweet reading "currently cooking up a conspiracy theory that will be adopted by every schizophrenic uncle in america that charli xcx made her brat album to help propel kamala harris into the presidency."

Tweet reading "Charli XCX: Kamala IS Brat Pete Buttigieg (sheepish, being egged on by Chasten): uh... I am also Brat (Massive throng starts booing and throwing tomatoes at him) Deranged online Zoomer with no prospects: the man has NOT ONCE IN HIS LIFE been Julia."

Fox also made an appearance in the music video for "360," so she really is everywhere.

Reddit turns on Kamala Harris as memes overwhelm forums https://www.dailydot.com/debug/kamala-harris-reddit-posts/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 18:15:23 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1630838 Kamala Harris over reddit logos

Vice President Kamala Harris is all but officially the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee for president. After just a day of campaigning, she was backed by more than 1,976 pledged delegates. That’s enough for her to win the nomination outright on the Democratic National Convention’s first ballot.

Ever since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race over the weekend and effectively turned the party’s nomination over to Harris, the internet has been flooded with Harris discourse, memes, and discussion, from coconut riffs to Brat-inspired rebrands, unburdened by what has been.

On Reddit, there’s been no shortage of discussion either, with posts about Kamala and memes about Kamala hitting the front page of r/all daily.

But some people on Reddit have had enough of what they’re calling ‘Kamala spam,” especially in subreddits where they say posts about the vice president are wildly out of theme or irrelevant. Some posters even suspect astroturfing bots to be behind the flood of Kamala posts. Many posters, it seems, are feeling burdened by what is.

“I’ve been seeing Kamala Harris being posted on literally every subreddit, even apolitical ones. What’s going on? Is Reddit under attack by bots or something?” posted u/bowlis in /r/OutOfTheLoop on Tuesday, pointing to a couple of posts on r/GenZ, r/Pennsylvania, and r/pics.

And while r/Genz or r/Pennsylvania might seem like a more natural place to discuss politics, r/Pics posters in particular have been complaining about the flood of political posts in recent days.

“Why is this sub ‘Us politics’ now?” commented u/rhett_ad under a since-deleted post of Harris at the Mexican border titled ‘VP Kamala Harris at the US Mexico Border. Trump claims she’s never been to before.’

But they’re not the only redditor to complain about the flood of Kamala posts.

“When did this turn into a political subreddit?” asked u/bucky133. “That's all I see from it for weeks now.”

“It's just bots and Karma farming,” explained u/ilaym712 referencing the points accumulated from Reddit’s upvote system.

“*Kamala farming,” u/nate6259 corrected jokingly.

Off-theme Kamala posting also filled up non-politics subreddits like r/Interestingasfuck, where a post to a news article about Harris securing enough delegates to win the nomination was received frostily by redditors wondering what about the news merited its inclusion on the subreddit.

“As an American, this isn't ‘Interesting as fuck,’” commented u/Yolectroda in response to an explanation attributing the flood of Kamala posts to Reddit being a website used primarily by Americans. “Sure, it's good that she got it done, but it was expected once Biden and a bunch of others gave her their endorsements.”

“this place has been political posts for the past few weeks,” commented u/BTSherman.

In recent weeks some smaller subreddits have also lost patience with all the politics posting.

On r/LostGeneration, where posters lament the sorry state of the economy and the feeling among many that they’re part of a lost generation who won’t ever make the same income as their parents, the mods pinned a post a couple of weeks ago warning about “DNC bots.” They pointed to “a frequency with the number of bots trying to push an agenda” as the election gets closer.

And on Tuesday, the mods pinned another post saying that posting in support of Kamala is a violation of the subreddit’s rules against justifying “genocide or genocidal policies.”

“This is not a sub for political campaigning and canvassing, this is not a sub for white washing genocidal world leaders,” posted u/ChickenNugget267. “You have the rest of reddit to canvass for your favourite genocidal fascist. You've taken over so many good subs with your bullshit. Leave this space alone. If you don't like that, feel free to share your discontent down below and we'll be sure to ban you.”

Redditors aren’t just upset about Kamala posting though. As much of the site fills up with political discussion ahead of the presidential election in November, there’s also general backlash from redditors about any discussion about politics outside of the designated subreddits.

And while Reddit’s AutoModerator has an option to filter out all Politics posts from r/pics, all the politics are still tiring some people out.

“is this r/pics or r/politics?” asked u/bowlis under a post in r/pics of an unflattering post of Donald Trump’s hair discussing the former president’s age and impeachment history.

“Until November, you'll find even r/gangstaswithwaifus is r/politics,” commented u/CharlesIngalls_Pubes sardonically.

On r/gangstaswithwaifu, however, no recent Harris pics appear. But there is one from a month ago of Trump.

Kamala Harris is having a ‘Brat Girl Summer’: Here’s what that means https://www.dailydot.com/memes/kamala-is-brat-meme/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 17:37:24 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1630587 Kamala Harris in green

"Kamala IS brat" is a phrase posted to Twitter by English singer Charli XCX after Kamala Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee. This endorsement by the popular artist spread fast and was soon embraced by the Harris campaign, entering full meme status in a matter of days.

News anchors and political analysts are now left to try and interpret what it means to be "brat" as the young folk run circles around them online.

What is the Charli XCX brat girl summer?

Before you understand why Kamala is brat, you need to acquaint yourself with the concept of brat girl summer. On June 7, 2024, Charli XCX released her sixth studio album titled Brat, which was well-received by fans and critics alike.

As one of the hottest albums of the season, it wasn't long before the sweaty months of 2024 were declared "brat girl summer" by Charli XCX fans. Meme scholars and others have defined "brat" as a state of being unapologetically authentic and embracing their intent.

The artist herself had something to say about the definition in a TikTok video.

"You're just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party, and maybe says some dumb things sometimes," she says.

Other traits include blunt honesty, volatility, and being able to party through it.

But what does 'Kamala IS brat' mean?

On July 21, Charli XCX tweeted out "Kamala IS brat" to the world, launching a phenomenon that may influence the history of the U.S.

So why is Vice President Kamala Harris brat?

She certainly has said some things that are not "dumb" but a little weird, and more importantly, very much authentically Kamala. The unusual, vaguely philosophical statements she's made in some of her speeches—including "what can be, unburdened by what has been" and "You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’”—have become memes of their own, and given her a cult of personality on social media.

This foray into meme culture has fueled her popularity as the new presumptive Democratic presidential candidate for 2024, and it's not so surprising that she's caught the attention of young pop culture figures like Charli XCX.

Kamala is brat tweet reading "can’t believe charli xcx is successfully doing foreign intervention in a US election as an album marketing tactic."

According to NBC News, associate professor at the Berkeley Center for New Media Abigail De Kosnik said that Harris is "plugged in" to pop culture trends. Few, if any, past presidential candidates can make this claim, particularly the ones over the last couple of cycles.

'Kamala is brat' meme spread and campaign adoption

With Harris' pop culture prowess, her campaign was quick to adopt the label of "brat" and incorporate it into her new presidential campaign, which must make up for lost time after replacing President Joe Biden. The Kamala HQ Twitter account changed its profile banner image to say its name in a font and on a background color that mimics the Brat album cover.

https://twitter.com/heyjaeee/status/1815398219737690121

Political experts are lauding the move as a way to appeal to the younger left-wing crowd that felt alienated by the Biden campaign as well as a method of deflecting criticism around Harris' somewhat messy affect. Unlike most politicians, she may be able to come off as authentic in a way that appeals to voters of all ages.

Kamala Harris’ ‘Brat’ branding leaves Fox News hosts baffled https://www.dailydot.com/debug/kamala-harris-brat-fox-news/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 15:15:27 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1630345 Members of the five talking(l+r), Kamala Harris(c)

Brat discourse made its way onto Fox News thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.

And the network's conservative hosts do not get the hype—or understand the memes at all.

The memes and overall "brat" aesthetic derive from Charli XCX's latest album, Brat. In the weeks before President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race, Charli XCX fans melded Brat's signature neon green hue and Harris' infamous coconut tree quote into uber-popular memes about Harris.

https://twitter.com/ryanlong03/status/1808510079382982870

Then, on the day Biden endorsed Harris to be the Democratic nominee for president, Charli XCX declared "Kamala IS brat" in a tweet.

Harris' campaign ran with the Brat association: Its new X header photo says "kamala hq" in Brat's font and colors and posted Brat-themed announcements on Instagram.

The memes and Harris' team's usage of them have been so popular that yesterday, Fox News' The Five—which features hosts Greg Gutfeld and Dana Perino and contributors Jessica Tarlov and Katie Pavlich—took on the discourse.

In a clip, Gutfeld said he doesn't understand how "brat" memes help Harris. Perino said that the memes undermine Harris' credibility.

https://twitter.com/AriDrennen/status/1815878880164712749

"I don't know how these memes actually help her because they speak to the truth that she's an unserious person," Gutfeld said. "Sorry to pee on your coconut parade."

Perino said that if she wanted to become the first female president, she would "really want to be taken seriously."

"If you're too online and you're just focused on the too online audience on both sides," she said, "you're going to lose a bunch of people who are saying 'can we just have somebody normal?'"

Gutfeld then said "do you really want brats to run this country? They already do enough damage," to which Tarlov replied, "you don't understand the essence of Brat summer."

The essence of a Brat summer is, of course, is living without a care, partying, and having a healthy amount of self-confidence.

Pavlich chimed in that she believes "white boy summer" memes from Trump's young male fan base will exceed Brat's cultural impact.

Meanwhile, people online found the hosts' confusion and bewilderment hilarious.

"The funniest part of the Kamala BRAT shit is people on Fox News who have never spoken to a teenager trying to explain it to the 75 year olds watching," an X user tweeted.

"This is so funny," another person said. "They couldn’t make [Harris] seem cooler if they tried."

Others said Brat being discussed on Fox News cements its icon status.

"I can’t believe that history books will be studying 'Brat' not just for the masterpiece that it is but for being a part of the branding for the 2024 election," an X user tweeted. "Fox News quoting brat is unreal."

The ‘I’m With Her’ meme is back https://www.dailydot.com/memes/im-with-her-meme/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 18:49:48 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1629438 Im with her logo and text

"I'm With Her" is a political slogan adopted by the 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential campaign that transformed into an enduring meme. The original slogan made use of the 'H' in 'Hillary' with the arrow pointing to the right or "forward" in place of the horizontal line in the letter and adorned many bumper stickers and t-shirts during the 2016 election year.

Additionally, the slogan was appropriated by jokesters on social media to declare their support for other women as a meme, from celebrities to anthropomorphized characters designed to appear female.

I'm with her meme showing an anthropomorphized taco smiling

With Vice President Kamala Harris in position to become the second-ever presidential nominee for either party in the U.S. in 2024, the phrase is making a comeback.

"I'm With Her" meme origins

The slogan and iconic design of the campaign merchandise was created by graphic designer Ida Woldemichael in 2015. She was working for the Clinton campaign and submitted her design to a bumper sticker contest among the staff meant to drum up ideas for slogans and iconography that would speak to supporters.

According to Woldemichael, "I'm with her" made perfect sense for a campaign fueled by excitement about the idea of America's first female president.

"I started with some obvious stuff, ‘Honk for Hillary,’ some fun uses of the ‘H’ [Michael Bierut’s Hillary logo], but then when Jennifer and I looked at the sketches, ‘I’m With Her’ really stood out from the set," she told Fast Company. "It was so simple, yet so unmistakable, since there was only one ‘her’ in the race."

"I'm With Her" memes take off

Within a couple of months, people were chanting the phrase at campaign events and the hashtag was taking off on social media platforms. Clinton posted a photo of herself with Katy Perry under the tag on October 24, 2015, using the singer's popularity to help spread the slogan.

As time went on, more individuals, celebrities, and political figures announced their support for Clinton using the phrase "I'm with her" or the corresponding hashtag. On June 9, 2016, former President Barack Obama officially endorsed her in a video, speaking the slogan aloud.

https://youtu.be/S9W0F2mz1jc?feature=shared

In February of 2016, as liberals and leftists were forming a clear split between Clinton and fellow presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, a Reddit user came up with the hashtag #ImWithJew, referencing Sanders' Jewish heritage. It's unclear whether this user was a Sanders supporter or just a troll.

Later that year, when it became obvious that Clinton was going to defeat her Democratic rival in the primaries and secure the nomination, Sanders fans begrudgingly accepted her as the candidate they would support against Donald Trump. On June 8, in a now-deleted tweet, Twitter user @MadBlackThot posted the first known usage of the hashtag "GirlIGuessImWithHer."

July 2024 "I'm with her" meme resurgence

On July 21, 2024, President Joe Biden announced on Twitter that he was dropping out of the presidential race against Trump following recommendations by many high-level Democrats. The presumption of nomination quickly fell upon Harris, being his Vice President, and energy around the idea of a woman for President was reborn.

On that same day, actor Ken Jeong posted a photo of himself posing with Harris with the slogan and three heart emojis in red, white, and blue.

https://twitter.com/kenjeong/status/1815218284608078010

Despite this surge of support, polling on Harris shows that she is neck-and-neck with Trump on approval and potential votes in November. FiveThirtyEight polls show her with a lower disapproval rating at 51 percent to Trump's 53 percent, but also a slightly lower approval rating.

Polls of likely voters show Harris lagging behind Trump most of the time, but very often not outside of the margin of error. She also appears to be doing better than Biden was in this respect, with the Washington Post analysis measuring her at 1.5 points behind the Republican nominee to Biden's 1.9 points.

'I was one of the 44,000'

A related meme emerging from the sudden Kamala Harris campaign references a Zoom call attended by 44,000 people and hosted by the political group Win With Black Women on the night of July 21. According to reports, the attendees raised over $1.5 million for Harris in just three hours.

The moment was so powerful, particularly for Black women, that the phrase "I was one of the 44,000" took off on social media and can be seen on campaign images for Harris already, as well as in joke tweets.

Im with her logo and text

"I'm With Her" is a political slogan adopted by the 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential campaign that transformed into an enduring meme. The original slogan made use of the 'H' in 'Hillary' with the arrow pointing to the right or "forward" in place of the horizontal line in the letter and adorned many bumper stickers and t-shirts during the 2016 election year.

Additionally, the slogan was appropriated by jokesters on social media to declare their support for other women as a meme, from celebrities to anthropomorphized characters designed to appear female.

White male MAGA influencer roasted for claiming to be a Black woman who would never vote for Kamala Harris https://www.dailydot.com/debug/joey-mannarino-trump-fan-black-woman-kamala-harris-attack/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 18:27:37 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1629525

A supporter of former President Donald Trump stands accused of pretending to be a Black woman on social media to attack Vice President Kamala Harris. He said it's all a misunderstanding.

Pro-Trump influencer Joey Mannarino said to his more than 488,000 followers on X on Tuesday that he was a "TRUE Black American woman" before vowing to never vote for Harris.

"I'm a TRUE Black American woman and I've been Black all my life. I was born Black and I will die Black," Mannarino wrote. "My mommy was Black. My daddy Black. I will NEVER cast a ballot for that Kamala Harris woman as long as I live! Trump all the way, all day everyday!"

https://twitter.com/cturnbull1968/status/1815556436623057126

Mannarino's text was also shared alongside an image of Black Trump supporter Lavern Spicer that was quickly deleted, but not before countless users captured screenshots and videos of the post.

"I just caught @JoeyMannarinoUS pretending to be a Black Woman voting as a Republican," X user @BaloneyTony305 wrote. "PLEASE SHARE THIS FAR AND WIDE. ALL MAGA HAS ARE LIES!!!"

https://twitter.com/BaloneyTony305/status/1815486434930819456

But Mannarino denies the allegations and instead claims that the post was accidentally made on his profile by Spicer, a Black conservative woman running for Congress in Florida’s 24th District.

"A tweet posted earlier from my account was the result of my account being logged in on a friend's device. Clearly, I am not a Black woman," Mannarino said. "Unlike the Democrat nominee for President, I don't spend my time pretending to be a Black woman to garner votes under false pretense. The lesson here is always log yourself out when borrowing or using friend's devices, because even months later you'll stay logged in if you haven't changed passwords. On to the next scandal."

In his comments, Mannarino referenced a refrain from 2020 on the right that Harris isn't Black.

Spicer herself also defended Mannarino's claim in a post of her own.

"I will be holding a Spaces later today with my friend Joey Mannarino [to] clear up some misunderstandings," she said. "I’ll get to doing that as soon as I finish distributing food to over 800 homeless people who line up outside of my food bank every week - multiples times per week - for food distribution. See you later!"

The pair did eventually hold a Spaces event on X to try and dispel the claim that Mannarino was pretending to be Spicer.

This isn't the first time that a right-wing influencer has been accused of pretending to be a Black woman.

In 2020, Dean Browning, a former county commissioner and failed congressional candidate from Pennsylvania, set the internet ablaze after claiming to be a Black man while criticizing former President Barack Obama.
