If you could wish for any TV series to do an Abbott Elementary crossover, what would it be?

Sorry kids (and teachers—oh my stars, especially teachers), but it’s almost back to school time. Fortunately, for us all, that also means back to a very specific school: Abbott Elementary.

Quinta Brunson’s multiple-Emmy winning series that is “The Office but school” returns for its 4th season on Wednesday, October 9th on ABC. And it’s apparently bringing another show along with it.

Abbott Elementary crossover episode announced

During Abbott’s SDCC panel appearance this past weekend, Brunson teased a crossover with another show for season 4.

“We will be doing an interesting crossover this season,” she said, “I’m not gonna tell you with who or with what or where or when or how. But just know, it’s very exciting and I think it will change television as we know it.”

Social media weighs in with crossover possibilities

Naturally, this tease had the internet’s wheels spinning, with possible shows being speculated on and, as a result, some immensely fun sounding pairings that I now want to all occur.

The most likely candidates here are shows already owned by Disney/20th/Hulu, so the speculators focusing on those shows are likely warmer.

‘I’m sorry, this show is not a comedy’: People are mad ‘The Bear’ wins over ‘Abbott Elementary,’ was included in category at SAG Awards https://www.dailydot.com/news/the-bear-sag-awards-comedy/ Sun, 25 Feb 2024 03:33:13 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1531974

Some Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards viewers are perturbed by The Bear winning Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series award. They’re saying it’s not a comedy and shouldn't qualify.

The nominees in the category also included Abbott Elementary, Barry, Only Murders in the Building, and Ted Lasso. While The Bear took home the win, some fans pointed out that the show could easily be placed in the drama category.

“Putting The Bear and Beef in categories they don’t belong in robs other performances of winning,” wrote one user. “Abbott Elementary should’ve won. The Bear isn’t a comedy.”

Another user echoed the sentiment, “I LOVE The Bear, but beating Abbott Elementary for ensemble in a comedy is such a bummer. The Bear will make you laugh for sure, but it’s overwhelmingly drama IMO. Abbott is so funny and uplifting.”

“Daily reminder that the bear is not a comedy and is committing category fraud by competing as such,” another wrote.

A user explained, “Once again, since i'm already cancelled for saying it, the bear is not a comedy series <3 getting to laugh about something doesn't turn it into comedy <3 saltburn is funny as fuck and its not a comedy <3.”

Category fraud refers to situations in which an award winner appears to have been entered into a category they ordinarily wouldn’t in order to award a popular actor or role. For instance, Al Pacino was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 1973 Academy, although he was clearly the lead in The Godfather.

Although some users felt this was a clear infraction, other viewers said they disagree with that opinion. Others said they agree The Bear is a drama, but they simply didn’t care.

“I just started watching The Bear and it is in fact, a comedy series. Especially if you've ever worked in hospitality or retail before,” wrote one user.

The Bear also won Male Actor in a Comedy Series and Female Actor in a Comedy Series for the performances of Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri.

In a Reddit post on “Category Fraud and the Oscars,” users debated this topic several years ago. One user posited, "I feel like category fraud is overblown as an actual problem. The only instance of it that bothers me is when a big star in an obvious lead role gets put in supporting because it often takes a spot away from a less known actor who could benefit more from the exposure. What's important to me is that a selection of deserving actors get the recognition. I don't think the difference between lead and supporting is so important that we need to be super strict with it, necessarily."

‘Smartest brand collaboration’: Teacher discovers ‘Abbott Elementary’ clothing line https://www.dailydot.com/irl/abbott-elementary-clothing/ Thu, 28 Dec 2023 19:28:08 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1476245 Abbott Elementary clothing

A teacher stumbled upon Abbott Elementary's clothing line at JCPenney.

In a TikTok posted last week, Sofia Aguirre, a middle school theater arts teacher, shows Abbott Elementary's JCPenney clothing line at one of the stores locations. She shows a dress, jean jacket, skirt, blouse, and sweatshirt.

"I'm obsessed," Aguirre says of the clothing line. "They really should have told me this sooner because I would've bought so much of my teacher clothes here."

Aguirre says she bought a tote bag from the collection in another TikTok.

On Thursday, Aguirre's initial video on the collaboration had over 680,000 views on TikTok.

@sofiasaraia I would kill for volume two of the #abbottelementary collection #jcpenney #fashion #janineteagues #gregoryeddie #teacher #teacherclothes #teachersoftiktok ♬ original sound - Sofia Aguirre

As reported by the Dallas Morning News, the clothing line was set to debut alongside alongside Abbott Elementary's third season. However, the line debuted in the fall while both the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild were on strike and production for the third season was halted.

Many commenters on Aguirre's video said they loved the collection—and thought it was clever.

"This is the smartest brand collaboration I’ve seen in a long time," one commenter said.

"Every piece I’ve seen is so cute," another wrote.

"I have the yellow skirt and wear it all the time," a commenter wrote. "I absolutely love it."

The Daily Dot has reached out to Aguirre via TikTok comment.

Update 2:55pm CT, Jan. 8: In a TikTok message, Aguirre said that she feels the Abbott Elementary collection is both in line with her style and appropriate to wear to work, which is a tough combination for her to find in stores. Plus, the affordability of the collection is helpful.

"Teaching is often under recognized, and Abbott Elementary takes the time to properly address teacher and student concerns,” Aguirre told the Daily Dot. “While injecting humor into the reality of the job.”

Quinta Brunson’s historic Emmy win and Jimmy Kimmel’s dumb bit https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/quinta-brunson-abbott-elementary-jimmy-kimmel-emmys/ Tue, 13 Sep 2022 16:27:41 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1243392 Jimmy Kimmel laying on stage next to Quinta Brunson during her Emmy's speech while others are behind

There were so many terrible bits at last night's Emmys, but Jimmy Kimmel's was the biggest flop.

Abbott Elementary, the show created by and starring Quinta Brunson, picked up three Emmys, including Sheryl Lee Ralph for supporting actress. Brunson won an Emmy for writing on the comedy series, which is an integral part of the show's success.

Unfortunately, before her historic win—she's only the second Black woman to win the comedy writing category—Kimmel and Will Arnett did a dumb bit where Arnett dragged his body on stage as if he were dead.

And then when Brunson won, Kimmel just committed to the bit and stayed on the ground, crowding her shot. The optics did not sit right with people.

"If #QuintaBrunson stepping over #JimmyKimmel who literally laid in her spotlight on the day she won an Emmy isn’t a metaphor for what it means to be a WOC in a white mans world I don’t know what is," said one tweet.

https://www.twitter.com/hebagowayed/status/1569510186414669825

Backstage after the segment, Brunson told Variety that "the bit didn't bother me that much, I don't know what the internet thinks." Brunson got her start at BuzzFeed, so she likely has a good idea what the internet thinks.

She added that Kimmel "gave me my first big late-night spot" and that she's "gonna be on his show on Wednesday so I might punch him in the face, I don't know."

https://www.twitter.com/Variety/status/1569529087453954048

People were reminded of that time Kimmel was involved in the Moonlight-La La Land Oscars disaster, too. Late Monday, Kimmel told Entertainment Tonight that he had his "eyes closed, I had no idea where I was," so he wasn't really thinking about optics. He went on to praise Brunson's talent, but we can safely say Jimmy Kimmel knew exactly where he was.

‘Abbott Elementary’ fans are requesting school shooting episode from show creator Quinta Brunson https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/quinta-brunson-abbott-elementary-shooting-episode/ Thu, 26 May 2022 12:02:33 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1207896 Quinta Brunson with tweet inset "wild how many people have asked for a school shooting episode of the show I write. people are that deeply removed from demanding more from the politicians they've elected and are instead demanding 'entertainment.' I can't ask 'are yall ok' anymore because the answer is 'no'."

"wild how many people have asked for a school shooting episode of the show I write," tweeted Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson on Wednesday. "people are that deeply removed from demanding more from the politicians they've elected and are instead demanding 'entertainment.' I can't ask 'are yall ok' anymore because the answer is 'no.'"

In the wake of this week's devastating shooting in Uvalde, many of Brunson's followers were shocked by this revelation. Abbott Elementary is a sweet, low-stakes sitcom about daily life in an elementary school, and it's hard to understand why any viewer would want to introduce violence and trauma to the show.

But as Brunson continued to explain on Twitter, she's received this disturbing request multiple times. "please use that energy to ask your elected official to get on Beto time and nothing less," she wrote, referring to Beto O'Rourke confronting Texas Gov. Greg Abbott over his opposition to gun control.

https://twitter.com/quintabrunson/status/1529571903102324736

It speaks to the widespread sense of helplessness that people are turning to a sitcom for guidance. Most of the people replying to Brunson's thread are appalled, expressing shock at the idea of injecting such a dark topic into the show. Abbott Elementary is warm and comedic in tone, and Brunson has mentioned that the kids playing her students treat filming the show like attending a real school. So in addition to the fact that most viewers would likely be upset by a school shooting episode, the filming process could easily be traumatic for the child actors involved.

Surprisingly though, some of Brunson's followers did continue to argue in favor of a school shooting episode, despite Brunson's direct requests to stop. There appears to be a small contingent of viewers who believe the show could help to "heal" the national trauma of school shootings, or encourage political change by exploring the issue on-screen.

Obviously there's a long history of sitcoms tackling social issues in "very special episodes," but there's a big difference between a PG-rated exploration of racism or drug addiction, and depicting mass-murder in a realistic and potentially triggering context. In recent years, a lot of emphasis has been placed on pop-culture representation as a form of activism. But representing something onscreen isn't always a constructive statement. If politicians aren't moved to enact gun control measures after seeing real children die, a fictional TV show is probably not going to make any difference.
