However, if you’ve been watching any of the water polo events so far, you may have noticed a recognizable figure who seems lost and, knowing him, very well might have been. 

Yes, rap legend Flavor Flav has been ever-present at the US polo events. You’ve undoubtedly caught a glimpse during the broadcast so far and thought, “wait, shouldn’t he be wearing comically large clock necklaces somewhere?”

However, Flav’s presence is of a more official manner than you might imagine. And it’s fantastic. 

How Flavor Flav got involved with Olympic Water Polo

On May 4th, water polo Olympian Maggie Steffens posted on Instagram that revealed how many Olympic athletes hold second and third jobs to help achieve their medal dreams. 

Below that post was a comment by Flav, who wrote, “AYYY YOOO,,, as a girl dad and supporter of all women’s sports—imma personally sponsor you my girl,,, whatever you need.” 

“And imma sponsor the whole team,” he added. “My manager is in touch with your agent and imma use all my relationships and resources to help all y’all even more. That’s a FLAVOR FLAV promise.”

How good is a Flavor Flav promise, you ask? As good as its weight in gold clock necklaces, because on July 1st, Flavor Flav officially signed a five-year sponsorship deal with USA Water Polo to cover the men’s and women’s water polo teams.

Flav spoke to NBC Olympics in May to explain more of his reasoning behind the support. “For me doing this, I ain’t gonna lie, to me this is one of the biggest things that I feel that I could have ever done in life, outside of the other accomplishments that I’ve made to music,” he said. “By sponsoring a water polo team and helping these girls out, this is bigger than me winning a Grammy.”

It’s all pretty awesome and Flav looks like he’s having the time of his damn life cheering on the team, encouraging other celebrities to do the same, and even hanging out with First Lady Jill Biden.

Flav’s also not content to just cheer from the sidelines. The man wants in on the action too:

Demetra Dias (@demetradias) is a teenage influencer on TikTok with over 2.8 million followers and nearly 205 million likes. She isn’t famous, and unless you’re a femme-presenting Gen Zer, it’s unlikely that you know who she is.

But even though Demetra isn’t a famous movie star or model, she has gained a massive following of rabid fans who want to buy everything she’s wearing in her fit videos.

What is the "Demetra Effect?"

The Demetra effect (or #DemetraEffect) is a term coined by the creators' fans hoping to emulate the TikToker’s style. There is even an Instagram fan account, @demetradiascloset, dedicated to looking up the pieces found in her wardrobe on her videos and social media posts. The Demetra Dias Closet account has over 72.4k followers.

It is interesting to note that a lot of what Demetra Dias wears is relatively simple jeans, pastels, and bold block colors. The key to her style is simplicity, which is a look that looks great on all different body sizes and shapes. In all, this makes her style extremely accessible to a wide range of people.

Demetra’s popularity has been noticed by brands, even if the vast majority of the internet hasn’t. Because her fans are clamoring to match the influencer’s style, brands like Aeropostale have worked with her for back-to-school sales of their new jeans.

The Demetra effect overall appears to be the inspiration she has over others’ style, to the point that the hashtag #demetraeffct has become a meme on TikTok.

After Demetra posted about buying a specific kind of Adidas, fans of her style went out and bought that exact style of Adidas for themselves.

When she posts about specific brands and “hauls,” folks in the comments want to know exactly where to go and what the names of the items are, which she is only too happy to share.

If you could wish for any TV series to do an Abbott Elementary crossover, what would it be?

Sorry kids (and teachers—oh my stars, especially teachers), but it’s almost back to school time. Fortunately, for us all, that also means back to a very specific school: Abbott Elementary.

Quinta Brunson’s multiple-Emmy winning series that is “The Office but school” returns for its 4th season on Wednesday, October 9th on ABC. And it’s apparently bringing another show along with it.

During Abbott’s SDCC panel appearance this past weekend, Brunson teased a crossover with another show for season 4.

“We will be doing an interesting crossover this season,” she said, “I’m not gonna tell you with who or with what or where or when or how. But just know, it’s very exciting and I think it will change television as we know it.”

Actually, no. It turns out the dancer was a double named Nick Pauley, who is a pro with previous work for Katy Perry and Doja Cat. WHAT?!

Big things have arrived on The Sims 4.

July 23rd was a world-changing day for the digital denizens of the Sims-verse and their all-ruling God human puppet masters. For you see, there was a free update to the base game, but it wasn’t just any ol’ run of the mill, bug fixin’ update. No no.

As of this week, the game contains straight-up polyamory! The new update also allows you to livestream your gameplay without worrying about copyright infringement issues for music.

Sims 4 update introduces streaming mode

If you go into the the Music section of Game Options, you’ll now see a “Safe for Steaming” toggle that allows you to play only the music that’s safe for streaming.

TikToker @jeremy_gonewild explains the update thusly: "This blocks copyrighted music from playing on your Sims radio when they listen to the radio."

But, Jeremy cautions, "This isn't about build mode music, or the Create-A-Sim music, that stuff is fine. This is preventing a Simlish version of Last Friday Night by Katy Perry from coming on your Sims radio while you're livestreaming, earning you a copyright strike."

To his point, you'll notice quite a difference between songs that are copyright approved. You'll notice all of the in-game original Sims music—including those composed by Mark Mothersbaugh—are free to use in streaming mode:

When you take a look at every other music genre, nearly all of the Simlish versions of actual songs don't make the cut:

While your sims won't be having a Brat Summer during a live stream anytime soon, you'll no need to worry about your Sims live stream being rudely interrupted because of the man!

Polyamory enters The Sims 4 with latest update

But that's not all. Yup, things are about to get real messy in the Sims-vese, folks. The update contains a feature called Romantic Boundaries, which allows users to add nuance to their romantic in-game relationships, tweaking their Sims’ preferences around jealousy and exclusivity.

According to the update’s patch notes, “[You can] define the conditions under which your Sims become jealous.”

How jealous can your Sims get? Well, there’s now quite the range, as your Sims could get jealous at non-physical romance, physical romance, "WooHoo", or, if you’re not all about that drama life, they can not get jealous at anything.

The controls exist in the Create-A-Sim feature, alongside the Gender and Sexual Orientation options in the Identity panel. These features can be changed at any time. 

However, you’re not locked into your choices, as your Sims’ opinions and preferences can be changed at any time. It'll look something like this in the Simology menu under Relationship Preferences:

The polyamory feature has been heavily requested, as beforehand, the only method players could get their Sims to have multiple romantic partners would be to complete a serial romantic aspiration to achieve a trait that prevents it. There were also cheats one could copy-paste that would give them the trait instantly.

But, no more: Sims can now dip into many inks with no hoops to jump through. At the same time as the base game update, EA also introduced an expansion pack called Lovestruck, which introduces even more locations for sims to "WooHoo" in.

This fresh take on the 1984 classic is spreading across TikTok, with the sound appearing in an eye-watering 439,400 clips. It has a niche origin, millions of views, and has even sparked a little bit of debate.

The sound

Didn’t you hear? There’s an emergency. Well, that’s what the female voice repeats over a looping, pulsing beat. She chants: “Emergency/Emergency/Paging Dr Beat.” And so on. 

The earliest iteration of this sound dates to March 26, by police officer @amirehxz. But it really blew up on May 16, as a troupe of nurses danced to the tune—don’t worry though, they were on their break.

Now, the trend has diverted into two. Those wanting to check their outfits, and those who truly just want to dance like no-one’s watching.

Where’s it from?

"Paging Dr Beat" is a 1984 hit by Gloria Estefan. This remix, which samples the legendary tune, comes from DJ Johrey, who may or may not have remixed the song in an internet cafe in Thailand. Released on Dec. 28 2023, it has over 7 million views on YouTube.

As explained by TikToker Gee Derrick, this song is an example of something called “budots”—a niche, Filipino subgenre of dance music. Consequently, Filipinos especially have had fun with this sound.

It wouldn’t be a viral trend without discourse, and this one, I’ll admit, is a doozy. Similar to the “Yanny/Laurel” divide, TikTokers just can’t make their mind up about what they’re hearing. On the one hand, some are hearing “Paging Dr Beat/Emergency Emergency.” Meanwhile, others say they hear “Emergency/Paging Dr Beat/Emergency.” 

The fancy term for this is "auditory illusion," which essentially means that reading a word impacts how you hear it. 

“Humans are so used to listening to speech that it seems easy and effortless, but actually, reconstructing someone's message from the sounds we hear is an extremely complex task," linguist Jessamyn Schertz told CTV news. 

"Just by looking at a word, or even by closing your eyes and imagining a word, that influences the way we hear the exact same sound.”

But unlike a lot of these illusions, there’s actually a definite answer to this discourse. TikToker Jen (@jencapella) went back to the considerably slower OG song and confirmed it was definitely “Emergency/Paging Dr Beat/Emergency.” Some commenters remained doubtful, but you can’t please everyone.

Hailey Welch, popularly known as "Hawk Tuah girl" attended Rock the South country music festival last weekend to hype up the next act, but her appearance seemed to confuse the audience more than stirring up excitement.

An announcer at the Rock the South music festival in Cullman, Alabama, last weekend called Welch onto the stage by her real name rather than her internet moniker. "Let's hear it for Warren Zeiders and Jelly Roll!" Welch shouted, attempting to excite an audience that responded largely with silence and muted stares.

Shortly after her awkward appearance at Rock the South, Welch was seen at Karate Combat fight on July 25th, after she was invited by Asim Zaidi to attend the fight between Sam Alvey and Antonio Arroyo. 

Zaidi asked the 22-year-old who she would want to be pitted against in a match, and she wasted no time in telling him she would want to fight controversial queer pop singer JoJo Siwa.

The matchup isn’t as unlikely as folks would think, though, as Michelle Waterson-Gomez, the former #1 women’s Atomweight fighter in the world and former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion, offered to give Welch professional training for the hypothetical match if she committed to it.

Realistically, given Welch's fears of being kidnapped, it wouldn't be a bad idea for her to learn some basic fighting techniques even if she doesn't end up in a ring with Siwa.

We all know the feeling: after a slow start, we’re pumped that our brat summer’s finally in full swing. According to Pitchfork, brat summer ended last week, when, in the wake of President Biden’s announcement he was dropping out of the race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, Charli XCX posted “Kamala IS brat.” 

“In the hours following, Harris’ social media team leaned into her support, updating their social headers to BRAT’s green hue,” said the article. It continues, “Soon, people who were absolutely not having a Brat Summer—CNN reporter Jake Tapper, Minnesota governor Tim Walz,—began to pile atop an already fragile meme,” declaring that, “by the end of the day, Brat Summer had been pronounced dead.”

It's unclear how the phrase came to be the internet's recent favorite, but it's popularity on X (formerly Twitter) isn't new. Instances of the phrase date all the way back to the earliest days of the platform in 2012.

Is there anything Timothée Chalamet can’t do? He’s Willy Wonka, he’s Dune Paul, he’s Call Me By Your Name peach guy, and now…he’s Bobby Dylan. 

Bob Dylan biopic trailer released

Yesterday, the teaser trailer for James Mangold’s Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown dropped, giving the world its first glimpse of Chalamet as the freewheelin’, mumbly troubadour in action. (It was only just March of this year when we spotted Timmy filming for this in the streets of New York.)

The film covers Dylan’s rise to prominence as a folk music prophet, culminating with his controversial decision to go electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. As a result, we get a look at many era-appropriate West Village, NY locations, such as the Cafe Wha?.

We also see Edward Norton’s Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning’s Sylvie Russo, and Monica Barbaro’s Joan Baez, among others. 

But what of Chalamet?

Over the past sixty or so years, Bob Dylan impressions are dime a dozen. Heck, at times it sounds like Dylan himself is doing a Bob Dylan impression. Thus, Chalamet’s interpretation has to go a bit deeper, and has to reflect the human being beneath the “Dylan” persona. (Of course, he could have just asked Cate Blanchett for some coaching.)

It appears Timmy has done his homework, producing a voice that’s got the spirit of the original article without being a caricature. And those little eye twitches during his concert performances? Spot freaking on.

So yeah, it seems good overall. However, they missed a huge opportunity by not having the current Bob Dylan play his younger self.
