These include widely beloved figures with mass numbers of fans such as singer Taylor Swift and the late actress and animal lover Betty White.

Vance made the "childless cat lady" remarks on July 29, 2021, on an episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight. The then-Ohio Senator was trying to claim that people can only feel as though they have a stake in their nation's future if they have biological children.

Harris is the stepmother of two children brought into her life by her husband, attorney Doug Emhoff after they met on a blind date in 2013.

The childless cat lady memes of 2024 began to pop up around Twitter on July 22, just after Vance's old comments resurfaced amid hype for Harris' presidential campaign.

The stereotype of the childless cat lady or "crazy" cat lady mixes contempt for the image of the "spinster" that originated in the 18th century with the even older fear of the witch who keeps cats and is more likely to eat children than birth them.

In 1881, writer Hart Ayrault bemoaned the unmarried, childless woman who had "failed in the prime object of existence"—which, at least for women in Vance's view, was marrying a man and popping out kids.

"Tradition associates her with cats and parrots, on which she is supposed to lavish all that is left of affection in her withered heart," he wrote in Potter’s American Monthly.

Jennifer Aniston responds to Vance

On July 24, actress Jennifer Aniston posted to Instagram Stories, lambasting Vance for his statements in a rare foray into politics.

"I truly can’t believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States," the video text read. "All I can say is… Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day. I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too."

Aniston herself struggled with fertility difficulties, undergoing IVF and other treatments for a time in her late 30s and into her 40s. Her attempts to get pregnant were ultimately unsuccessful. She is more of a dog lady, however.

Vance has since doubled down during an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show last week. “Obviously, it was a sarcastic comment,” he said. "I’ve got nothing against cats.”

“People are focusing so much on the sarcasm and not on the substance of what I actually said. And the substance of what I said, I’m sorry, it’s true.”

Ugly Sonic references the original, much-abhorred video game character design for 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog. When the trailer was first released in late 2019, fans disapproved so vocally that the character was redesigned to resemble longtime fans' expectations.

Some thought that the film was doomed. However, it later seemed the character could be saved. Ugly Sonic himself wasn't doomed either, as seen in the many memes he's spawned.

The origins of Ugly Sonic

The first look at the 2020 take on Sonic came from ad agency Hamagami / Carroll Inc. Images from the company were leaked, revealing what the animated design of the film's version of Sonic looked like. People immediately regarded the design as off and, in one instance, "the stuff of nightmares." However, it wasn't until the film's first trailer came out that the full effect of the design was felt.

On April 30, 2019, the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer was released. The film was promised to be computer-animation-meets-live-action. The trailer simply fell short of expectations and the character's design stood out in a distracting way. Rather than matching the animation of Pokémon's Detective Pikachu, Sonic was punier, weird-looking, and had unsettling human-like teeth, quickly earning him the moniker 'Ugly Sonic' across social media.

The fervent backlash to Sonic's look made it clear that changes were necessary for the film to see commercial success.

Two days after the trailer's release, director Jeff Fowler tweeted and confirmed that major edits would happen to make the film live up to expectations.

Ugly Sonic and Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers

These memes enjoyed a moment from the time the trailer came out to beyond the final film's release. In 2022, the meme officially picked up the moniker "Ugly Sonic" with the release of Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers.

The character appears in the film in a meta form. Ugly Sonic is an actor who played Sonic the Hedgehog in the film's trailer within the Chip N' Dale universe. The cameo was genuinely funny and was a clever way to make use of the scrapped design. However bad the design was originally regarded, fans have found a way to come around and embrace Ugly Sonic.

PewDiePie’s Ugly Sonic drawing makes millions

In May 2019, Felix Kjellberg, who goes by PewDiePie on YouTube, announced he was going to try to draw Sonic the Hedgehog from memory.

“I think what freaked everyone out was the fact that he had human teeth at least that’s what I was bothered by,” said the YouTuber while attempting to draw Sonic. “Why does it look so creepy?” he asked of his own drawing. “I’m trying. I’m scaring myself.”

PewDiePie then tweeted that he would be putting his drawing on eBay. According to Dexerto, bidding on the doodle hit £10 million within hours.

A conspiracy theory that claims President Joe Biden is now tall after mysteriously growing several inches is slowly becoming the latest hot meme.

The tall Biden conspiracy theory

Last week, far-right conspiracy theorists cited a video of Biden outside the White House as proof that he had grown inexplicably. The theory alleges that Biden, who recently announced his plans to withdraw from the presidential election, has been replaced by a clone, given that he appears much taller than normal standing next to his wife Jill.

"Biden grew a few inches while he was missing for five days..." one user wrote.

The conspiracy theory comes not long after far-right figures claimed that Biden was either on death's door or outright deceased. Yet with that theory easily debunked given the president's public appearances, conservatives latched onto the Biden clone claim instead.

While Biden does look taller than his wife in the above video, the difference is attributable to the low angle of the camera as well as Jill Biden's walking a short distance behind him.

But at least some right-wing users appear to be taking the claim less seriously and have instead begun sharing memes.

Tall Biden Memes

In one example this week, a video altered by a group known as the "Dilley Meme Team" depicts Biden as even taller than before.

"Is it just me, or is Joe getting taller? Is that even Joe?" one of the meme's creators asked.

They followed up the post with an even more exaggerated Biden, who overshadowed Marine One on the White House lawn.

In that clip, Biden walks next to Jill and his son Hunter, causing the camera to shake with each step. They also add sound effects to each step.

The Daily Dot reached out to Brenden Dilley, a podcast host who runs the team that created the video, to inquire about the post. Dilley responded with a screenshot of the Daily Dot's previous coverage of the meme team alongside the statement: "You're welcome to blow me first."

In another post, Biden is towering over the nation's Capitol building.

A caption on the picture states: "At this rate of growth Biden will soon be unstoppable."

Trump's 18-year-old son Barron, who is a staggering 6'9, also found himself in the mix.

"I await their titanic duel," another said in a manipulated image.

Other posts referred to Biden as "Joeliath" and "Giant Joe," while some argued that his nickname should be changed from Dark Brandon to Tall Brandon.

"To all video editors... Now I crave a thread of Giant Joe memes," one user said.

The conspiracy is bigger than the meme

Although the memes were quite apparent to conservatives, they still dwarfed the conspiracy theory that alleged Biden had really replaced by a much taller body double.

"Joe Biden has never been 6’ 4 tall like the ‘body double’ towering over Jill and White House aides," another added. "And he’s never in his life moved as well as this other ‘body double’ caught on the way to his car."

Prominent Trump supporter Bill Mitchell also hyped the claims, posting in image he claimed of Biden in 2022 and 2024.

While the conspiracy theory remains prominent among mainline supporters of former President Donald Trump, the tall Biden memes appear here to stay.

At least until he leaves office next year.

The Demetra effect (or #DemetraEffect) is a term coined by the creators' fans hoping to emulate the TikToker’s style. There is even an Instagram fan account, @demetradiascloset, dedicated to looking up the pieces found in her wardrobe on her videos and social media posts. The Demetra Dias Closet account has over 72.4k followers.

It is interesting to note that a lot of what Demetra Dias wears is relatively simple jeans, pastels, and bold block colors. The key to her style is simplicity, which is a look that looks great on all different body sizes and shapes. In all, this makes her style extremely accessible to a wide range of people.

The Demetra effect overall appears to be the inspiration she has over others’ style, to the point that the hashtag #demetraeffct has become a meme on TikTok.

It reportedly broke the record for cash made over an R-rated film's first opening days as well as the best performance for a movie released in July, making over $438 million worldwide by Sunday.

What is Hugh Jackman's Wolverine meme referencing?

The original gag is known as the Wolverine crush meme, which shows the character from the animated series X-Men from the 1990s in the same pose, gazing longingly at a photo of Cyclops and Jean Grey. In the show, he strokes the image of Grey, indicating that he has a crush on her. This occurred on episode five of season one, which aired on January 30, 1993.

In the early 2010s, someone paired two screenshots from this scene while replacing the photo of the X-Men characters with someone else, creating a two-panel exploitable meme that would grace social media for many years to come. The scene is featured in a July 2010 Season 6, Episode 3 of the show called "Attack of the Killer App." The episode centers around the release of an "EyePhone," which Fry heads to the store to buy. When the store employee is honest with him about the device's shortcomings, Fry interrupts and yells, "Shut up and take my money," shaking a wad of cash in his hand.

The meme spread as part of the enthusiasm around the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden bowed out of the 2024 race following pressure from high-level Democrats and much of the public.

What is the Kamala Harris political compass meme?

This summer meme is a variation of the standard political compass meme format, a grid split into four quadrants with the ends of each axis labeled “left,” “right,” “authoritarian,” and “libertarian.” The Kamala Harris meme replaces these with “thinks she just fell out of a coconut tree,” “exists in the context,” “what can be,” and “burdened by what has been.”

These new labels reference statements made by Harris during political speeches that have become viral memes. The story about her mother and the coconut tree, and her habit of talking about “what can be, unburdened by what has been” have contributed to her reputation as a little bit weird and silly, making the Vice President relatable to all the messy ladies out there.

Origin of the political compass meme

Pace News LTD and political journalist Wayne Brittenden created and copyrighted the political compass we know today in 2001. Their website provides recommended reading to understand each of the four types of political thinking they’ve proposed: Authoritarian left, authoritarian right, libertarian left, and libertarian right.

The idea was that a set of 62 propositions could be used to categorize any individual, political party, or ideology, placing them somewhere on the grid based on how extreme or moderate they are in terms of economic and social policy.

Parodies of the political compass have appeared online since the early 2010s. Some of them attempt to describe the political attitudes of each quadrant in amusing and often biased terms, while others represent each with images of characters from popular media, celebrities, objects, other memes, or anything else imaginable.

The Kamala Harris political compass meme origins

The first use of the Kamala Harris political compass meme appeared on Twitter on July 24, 2024, by user @waldenmgreen. It makes use of two popular and highly meme quotes from Harris in speeches she gave at political events.

The one on the X-axis references the famous coconut tree quote from May 2023. Video footage of the speech in which Harris talked about something her mother liked to say was posted by the RNC Research account on Twitter to disparage her—a move that backfired spectacularly.

“My mother used to—she would give us a hard time sometimes and she would say to us ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you,’” Harris says in the video.

Harris has used the phrase "what can be, unburdened by what has been" multiple times during her political career. Its use as a meme may originate from yet another blunder by RNC Research from December 17, 2023.

Followers of @waldenmgreen responded to her initial post with their versions of the Kamala Harris political compass meme as the week went on. It wasn't long before the meme's creator provided a template of the new grid to make things easier on their fans.

It took less than a day for Twitter users to move on from fictional characters and to other subjects, including very old paintings and books from the 90s.

Cheilinus undulatus. Napoleon wrasse. Humphead wrasse. Whatever name you know it by, if you know it at all, it's probably because of this guy.

In late 2019 and early 2020, redditors in hip-hop, rap, and Travis Scott-specific subreddits began posting images of fish, stylized to look like Travis Scott. 

Some of them called it Trafish Scott, while others made SpongeBob Squarepants references, or photoshops and drawings of this coral reef-dweller—the Humphead Wrasse. 

The most famous image of the fish was one which photoshopped it adding human hair and a chain necklace. 

As you can see, the wrasse really does have human-like lips and teeth, but does it look like Travis Scott specifically? It's too funny for that to really matter. 

In July of 2020, Facebook page SKRT posted a fake tweet in which Scott himself says “Stop sending me This s***.” It resulted in tens of thousands of reactions and shares over the next few years.

Ultimately, TikTokers took notice of the meme. Posted in the spring of 2022, one user’s video received 2.2 million views, and another over 200,000 views.

This wasn’t the first time the internet had made Travis Scott into a meme.

In 2017, a photo taken during a show was posted to Instagram in which the rapper was shown yelling, with a mic and stand held over his head. 

It’s now emblematic of utter chaos all over the internet, with at least one user comparing it to DoodleBob.

And after the release of Scott’s 2018 record “Astroworld,” a slough of incidents prompted just as many discrete meme moments. 

Following the album’s release, Scott, and mother-of-his-child Kylie Jenner, threw their daughter Stormi a birthday party featuring a giant inflatable version of her head, which was an obvious riff on the “Astroworld’s” album cover.

Internet goers pretty much immediately began posting a myriad of spoof images—mostly riffing on the idea of a conspicuous giant head somewhere. 

Scott soon followed the release of “Astroworld” with an annual music festival held in Houston, Texas. On November 5th, 2021, during the festival’s third run (they skipped it in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), 10 concertgoers were crushed in the audience, and died from suffocation.

Darkly, this prompted its own set of memes, which said, “I survived.”

In response, Scott posted a video to his Instagram, not apologizing for what happened, but expressing empathy and remorse, which was itself memed.

And in 2023, what seemed to be a flash-bang was set off at one of his shows, prompting even more criticism, and snark. 

No matter which unprompted, unprovoked, and debased Travis Scott moment most tickles your funny bone, it's hard to deny that Travis Scott has a talent for getting himself into trouble.

The humphead wrasse are endangered due to overfishing and habitat loss. And for worse or for worse, it seems like attendees of Travis Scott’s shows have felt just as in trouble.

@scubaryan_ tweeted a video of the awkward event on X.com, where it has garnered over 11.8 million views.

Welch became a viral sensation after video creators Tim & Dee TV stopped her and another woman for a street interview. When asked to name a “move in bed [that] makes a man go crazy every time" Welch replied: “Oh, you gotta give him that hawk tuah and spit on that thang.”

Hawk Tuah girl challenges…JoJo Siwa to a fight?

Shortly after her awkward appearance at Rock the South, Welch was seen at Karate Combat fight on July 25th, after she was invited by Asim Zaidi to attend the fight between Sam Alvey and Antonio Arroyo. 

Zaidi asked the 22-year-old who she would want to be pitted against in a match, and she wasted no time in telling him she would want to fight controversial queer pop singer JoJo Siwa.

The matchup isn’t as unlikely as folks would think, though, as Michelle Waterson-Gomez, the former #1 women’s Atomweight fighter in the world and former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion, offered to give Welch professional training for the hypothetical match if she committed to it.

Realistically, given Welch's fears of being kidnapped, it wouldn't be a bad idea for her to learn some basic fighting techniques even if she doesn't end up in a ring with Siwa.

People cannot get enough of the J.D. Vance couch meme after a tweet falsely claimed that the Trump VP pick had made love to a sofa. Despite multiple articles debunking the post, and one which only helped to fuel tongue-in-cheek speculation, jokes about the U.S. Senator having relations with and being sexually attracted to furniture have continued into the week.

Social media users have now produced videos, limericks, and fake press releases related to the rumor.

If you missed it, you might want to sit down (but not on a couch). The reason this J.D. Vance couch meme is going around is because one single Twitter user decided to sow chaos by declaring that Donald Trump's running mate admitted in his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy to getting down with a latex glove inserted between two couch cushions.

The pages cited contain no such admission, and that individual followed it up with the meme from Arthur saying: "You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?"

Technically, the only thing Vance did wrong was to put himself in the spotlight by trying to be the next U.S. Vice President.

Why is the J.D. Vance couch meme still a thing?

The pushback from fact-checking outlets and Twitter Community Notes has only perpetuated the joke. On July 25, 2024, The Associated Press published and then deleted an article debunking the claim about Vance's affinity for sofas.

The fact that the article was deleted didn't make people think that the rumor was true, but pretending it did became a joke of its own.

As of July 26, the Vance couch jokes are still going strong.
