Southeast Asia’s first Unity Centre of Innovation has been officially founded after the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) announced a memorandum of agreement with Unity Technologies the creator of the Unity Engine, earlier today.

The innovation center has been established at LEVEL UP Inc, an incubator space created by MDEC. Nine development studios have already signed up to utilize the facility for access to Unity’s tools, resources and analytical software to help them build and market their games globally. The initiative is to support potential game developers and startup studios that are still in the early stages in game development using tools such as the Unity Analytics software that provides data analytics about gamer behaviours and market trends in addition to expert technical and business workshops by the Unity Evangelist team with their advanced Unity Pro software.

“To be the first country in Southeast Asia to establish a Unity Centre of Innovation marks a significant milestone in our mission to position Malaysia as a regional hub for game production and development by 2025… We are confident that the new Unity Centre of Innovation will propel the growth of our games industry to an important cornerstone of the digital economy in Malaysia”. - Dato' Ng Wan Peng, MDEC Chief Operating Officer

Alongside that, the President of Asia Pacific at Unity Technologies, Hubert Larenaudie said “We have seen the enthusiasm and passion of Malaysian game developers and are dedicated to supporting their growth with Unity’s latest technologies. By partnering with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, we look forward to solving hard problems for developers and enabling their success with better access to our tools”.

This will be a great opportunity for local game developers to grow and the next step for game development in Malaysia and the Southeast Asia region.

The Unity Centre of Innovation will begin operations this month with the nine game development studios being the first to enjoy the benefits of the facility. For more information and updates, you can check out the LEVEL UP official Facebook page or the LEVEL UP website.
