For fans of Critical Role, here’s another franchise based on D&D that made waves in Japan during the 1980s. Originally a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, Record of Lodoss War soon spawned its own franchise that has lasted till today.

Available now on Amazon Singapore as a physical release, the latest game in the franchise, Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, is one metroidvania that may have gone under the radar.

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth was developed under the close supervision of original creator Ryo Mizuno, and features Deedlit, the high elf heroine of the original series in a 2D action RPG.

This metroidvania portrays the as-of-yet-unknown story of Deedlit leading up to 2019’s Record of Lodoss War: Diadem of the Covenant. This game is not only a must-play for Record of Lodoss War fans, but first-time players can also jump into the game without knowing the franchise’s story.

As Deedlit, players will use spirits, various weapons, and magical powers to make their way through a sprawling maze-like world. The story finds the heroine lost in a world she doesn’t recognize and must find a way out of.

As players defeat enemies, they can use the Soul Stream to power up their spirits and gain the upper hand in battle. This includes summoning the spirits “Sylph” and “Salamander”, who bestow Deedlit with their special elemental abilities.

Ryo Mizuno truly was a pioneer when he made the original Record of Lodoss War fantasy novels, making the genre more widespread in Japan. In fact, it is even said that the famous fantasy trope of high elves having long ears was originally inspired by Deedlit herself through these novels.
