The Ys series has been a mainstay of the Japanese role-playing genre, with the games centring around Adol Christin and his heroic deeds around the world. While the presentation of these games has changed with each generation, the fast-paced action remains intact.

Intimidating title aside, this ninth entry of Nihon Falcom’s long-running action JRPG is still a force to be reckoned with and something that fans of the genre should try their hands at. It once again stars the red-haired adventurer Adol Christin in a spooky new quest.

The story takes place in Balduq, more commonly known as the Prison City, where players will uncover the mysteries of the prison and the prisoners within. This sees Adol coming into contact with the Monstrums, a rebel group of cursed vigilantes.

This ninth instalment includes all the hallmarks of the Ys series, like an array of skill attacks for players to unlock and utilise in combat, fast-paced action and thrilling boss battles. The game also introduces a number of new elements that are completely unique to Ys IX.

Primarily, this comes in the form of the special Monstrum abilities to explore Balduq and beyond, like through gliding and scaling walls. There’s also an entire guild management system players will utilise within the Prison City, where they can house escaped convicts.

With a full team of these Monstrums, players can switch between each of them on the fly as they battle a massive horde of inter-dimensional monsters. During their downtime, players will get to know the people who are helping Adol to break his Monstrum curse.

Beyond that, Ys X: Nordics, the long-awaited latest instalment commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Ys series will be coming to multiple platforms in 2023. So now’s the time to get to know the rest of the series, beginning with Ys IX.
